Just bought my ticket to the Carmel-by-the-Glass event held this afternoon at Devendorf Park in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Presented by Rich Pepe and Jack Galante, restauranteur and vintner, respectively. Yes, between 2 & 5 PM, I plan to be sipping wine from some of the best Monterey Vintners and pairing them with some taste treats, or "bites" from some of the wonderful restaurants in town.  Rich Pepe owns two of them, Little Napoli and Visuvio, plus Carmel Bakery and Vina Napoli. This is the 3rd Annual Event, with last year 500 tickets being sold. This year? Let's see. I look forward to mingling with at least that many Carmelites and others who have come to Carmel-by-the-Sea to participate in this event. Plus, 100% of the net proceeds benefit the Carmel Mission Foundation. I promised to post a...

Talk about being mesmerized when you look at the "waves" created by David Wight, sculptor of glass art.Yesterday, I walked into the Zantman Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea and looked at a DOUBLE WAVE.  They come in various sizes, sitting on a spinning pedestals with light shining from below. There is a choice of color from blue to purple, but my favorite is this aqua color wave seen on the photo below.  Prices range from $295 to $8,000.For more information: Zantman GalleriesLocated on San Carlos between Ocean & 7thCarmel-by-the-Sea, CA

Yesterday, we finished the program for the 21st Carmel Art Festival on May 15-18, 2014 and gave it to the printer. Being a Board Member and getting involved in organizing all aspects of this plein air event, has been very time consuming. The festival itself will be held at Devendorf Park and adjacent Mission street (which is being closed for the event) in the downtown commercial area right across the street from Carmel Plaza. Take the program, for example, the information contained therein needs to give all the information the public needs to know about the event itself such as: 1. 60 of some of the top plein air artists of today are participating, some local but most of them from out of the area - that in itself took about 6 months to finalize from application to them getting juried in...

Election day is always fun in Carmel-by-the-Sea. This is the last day that those running for office will be standing outside the downtown post office and talk to anyone and everyone to get their votes. Frankly, it's pretty much too late to talk someone into voting for them because most of the 2,000 that are eligible voters have mailed in their ballot already.  To explain, we actually have something like 4,000 people "living" in Carmel-by-the-Sea but half of them are second home owners and vote somewhere else. There is also a large contingent who own businesses here in town and those working here, about a thousand, but in all likelyhood they are not living within the city limits and cannot vote.   The other half, as I said, about 2,000 call the shots in this little one square mile city i...

Now I know there are many people around the United States that have really gone through a tough winter. With the cold temperatures and record inches & feet in snow fall, well it's almost over. Temperatures are really getting nice on the west coast, flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing around people are really showing a little more happiness ... "Thank God" Spring is and always has been the best time of the year to sell Real Estate. With tax season and tax returns people either put down payments on Real Estate investments, or spend some of that tax return money fixing up their homes. And then either enjoying their new look of their home or turning around and listing it for sale. So whether you are playing around your home, in the garden, jogging, biking, walking, meditating, swimming, ...

Today is an absolutely gorgeous day here in Carmel-by-the-Sea so naturally I headed down to the Ocean just like everyone else here. Yes, this is a morning ritual with many visitors and locals. And if you can't get there in the morning, you certainly need to do so at Sunset. But I digress. I noticed something right at the bottom of Ocean Avenue just before you step onto the sand at the top of the bluff: The Mutt Mitts have been there since I came into town way back in 1995, so that was not it. However, the "Save some Fish. Feed me Butts." container was new to me.  In the past, volunteers would actually SIFT THE SAND to get rid of butts that were left behind by thoughtless smokers. This is certainly a reminder that if you DO need to smoke, please put the butts in this container or take th...

Last night, I was invited to a private party at an art gallery here in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Because it was Valentine's Day, it was dubbed as a "singles party", yet a lot of couples showed up as well.  Mary Titus, gallery owner and artist, knows how to throw a party with excellent wines and food. She's a long time resident here with a wide range of friends in the community. Definitely not an invitation to pass up. When you go to a function like this or any other function for that matter, I take a lot of business cards with me as it is always a real estate networking opportunity for my brokerage. Why? Because more often than not the first question posed to me is: WHAT DO YOU DO? Although this was a social situation and the answer could have been "gardening" or any other number of pursuits, ...

On Valentine's Day there is a big focus on LOVE and in Carmel-by-the-Sea, more often than not, it comes in big bundles of fur. Yesterday, I saw these beautiful Newfoundlands being fawned over outside the Doud Crafts Fair gallery. Being such a doggie town, you will find that perfect strangers will come up to ask if they can pet your furry friend or even hand out treats. Especially big guys like these, a treat is never turned down and will make you an instant friend for life. Why is Carmel-by-the-Sea such a dog friendly town? 1. Many restaurants have open air courtyards where you can bring your dog. 2. Many inns in town allow pets, foremost being dog lover Doris Day's Crypress Inn. Here dogs are not just relegated to the rooms, but frequent the bar and great room for High Tea as well, wit...

Last night, I was invited to the Carrie Theis campaign kick-off at La Playa Hotel in Carmel-by-the-Sea for her bid to the City Council. Carrie was appointed to finish out Paula Hasdovac's term on the City Council a couple of years ago. So this is Carrie's first campaign for a full 4 year term. I have known Carrie for over a decade. Her family has owned the Hofsas House Hotel for over 70 years, a charming inn at the edge of town and which she now operates.  Ken Talmadge, a member of the current City Council and staunch supporter, extolled her qualifications last night in front of a crowd that included a couple of former mayors, city business leaders, and members of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Homeowners Association. Carrie has held many leadership roles including with the Carmel Innkeepers Ass...

Let me explain. When you come to Carmel-by-the-Sea to visit, or even when you live in and around town, you are not supposed to rush around, you come here for the beauty, the food and wine, the art, and to shop. And if you are lucky enough to live here, you still tend to do several of the activities below around town.  I do.  Click here or on photo below to link to Carmel Shopping Website. Here's a typical day of a visitor to Carmel-by-the-Sea: 6:00-7:00AM - there is nothing open, so you take a walk down the hill to Carmel Beach. Join all the locals and their dogs, it's easy to meet people. 7:00 - 8:00AM - A great time to stroll around town and do some window shopping. The coffee shops open at that time. 8:00AM - have some breakfast at your hotel, usually just a small Continental breakf...

FIRST, WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA? Just heard another retailer who tried to get an extension of her commercial  lease in Carmel-by-the-Sea, but the landlord was only willing to give a month-to-month lease.  Photo: Please click on photo to visit my Carmel Real Estate website. There are several reasons why landlords don't want to give longer leases right now, even to those who have been excellent tenants: 1. A lot of shorter leases were signed during the downturn of the market just to get spaces filled. Naturally, the leases were very advantageous to the tenant.  2. Quite a few buildings changed ownership recently with a high price tag. These new owners are looking for tenants with deeper pockets. 3. Several buildings will be going through major reno...

Carmel-by-the-Sea is fast becoming known for its fashion boutiques. A recent newcomer on Lincoln Street close to the Cypress Inn is Jolie with its distinctive mostly European and US made women's clothing. Co-owners Fatima Assar (pictured below) and Diana Read have been friends and business partners over many years, and recently decided to pursue their dream of opening this chic boutique for the discerning visitors and residents who shop in fashionable Carmel-by-the-Sea.Fatima has worked in the fashion industry in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles and attends industry events such as Fashion Week to purchase inventory for the boutique. The Carmel Art Festival here in Carmel-by-the-Sea is held every year outdoors at Devendorf Park. The City also closes down adjacent Mission Street between Ocean Avenue and 6th for the event. Banners are displayed up and down Ocean Avenue for a couple of weeks before the event, touting the Carmel Art Festival. All of this, of course, is City property and it charges vendors for this privilege. BY THE HOUR. Our event starts on Thursday, May 15, 2014 when the tent is put up on Mission Street and the information tent and Sculptures arrive for display at Devendorf Park. It is effectively done by Sunday, May 18, 2014. The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea also charges for: 1. Putting up "no parking" signage before and during the event.  2. Live music held by the event. (Yes, they charge by the hour fo...

This morning starting at 9AM, the winning artists from yesterday's judging of the 120 paintings, will be out painting in the 2-hour QUICK DRAW here in Carmel-by-the-Sea. During this short time which includes "travel time", they will need to bring back ONE newly painted painting and submit it for judging in this fun Sunday event. THAT MEANS THE 15 ARTISTS ARE MOST LIKELY PAINTING RIGHT HERE IN TOWN OR DOWN AT CARMEL BEACH. Visitors, especially, like to watch the canvases come to life in this short time. And it's awesome! These artists are so talented. Just look at what they painted on Thursday and Friday and entered into the main event yesterday. See www.carmelartfestival.org/SilentAuction2013.html That web page also shows all 120 paintings and the winners who are participating this morn...

60 plein air artists will be submitting two paintings each into the Carmel Art Festival between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM Friday, May 17. Judging will be Saturday morning and winners in various categories will be announced by 10:00AM Saturday, May 18, 2013. And, yes, they are still WET. Many an elbow or purse has brushed against a painting accidentally before it was safely hung on the artist's space on Mission Street here in Carmel-by-the-Sea. I am actually surprised that we don't have more problems. Luckily, the paintings dry pretty fast since they are hung outside in the open air for 24 hours before they are handled by their new owners. Also, the festival organizers have made an agreement with Al Asuncion and Natalie Sweet who have a mailing establishment in the "Court of the Fountains" in ...
