Borrego Springs might be 90 miles or so from San Diego but the winding roads make the trek at least a two-hour drive. Fortunately, it involves driving through beautiful country with fabulous scenery such as rolling majestic hills morphing into mountains littered with millions of large boulders on display. When you get over the pass and begin the downhill descent into Borrego Springs, you can view on the horizon a sun-glistened Salton Sea. Then you hit town and there are the thousands of tourists milling about because it is wildflower season, not to mention, a rare Super Bloom. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Photos of Visit to Borrego Springs, California.

When I spotted this lake in the distance, I insisted we drive as close as we could get. Good thing we had rented a Buick Enclave, which pretty much goes anywhere. My husband seemed a bit uncomfortable driving into the washes but then he has never owned a jeep nor participated in four-wheeling like I have. There is so much to see and do on a dry lake bed. For starters, the bed is not always totally dry. When there is a lot of rain, you can spot fairy shrimp at Clark Dry Lake. There is also vegetation such as creosote bushes, driftwood here and there and every so often an ocotillo, which is my new favorite desert plant. Ants galore. At one point, Clark Dry Lake was used by the military during World War II as a bombing range. You can read more and see a bunch more photos in my personal blog...

The first day we arrived in Borrego Springs, we tried to visit the Anza Borrego State Park Visitor's Center to no avail. Because it was a Sunday. That place was packed without any spare parking places. Bumper-to-bumper cars and traffic in this small desert town. Tourists everywhere. Pulling off the road to join long lines of vehicles as nature enthusiasts descended upon open fields after fields of wildflowers in bloom. That's why we decided to visit the Super Bloom there on Monday, when many tourists had gone home. We drove the opposite direction to Salton Sea that day, and visited Fonts Point on our way back to Borrego Springs. But on Monday, the real fun began. You can read more and see a boatload of photos of the visitor's center in my personal blog today at this link: Photos of Wildf...

This is an excellent example of tectonic plate thrusts in Anza Borrego State Park, and you will find this scene shortly after passing the trailhead for the Palm Canyon Hike. It's a 3-mile hike roundtrip. But much of it is not on a flat sandy path. The path is narrow in some places. In others, it vanishes, forcing you to look for footprints on smooth stone to find your way.You will also, if you are lucky like we were, spot Big Horn sheep on the ridges. Entire families of Big Horn sheep peeking down at you. Plus we saw costa hummingbirds and more sphinx moth caterpillars, along with a wide assortment of beautiful desert wildflowers in bloom for as far as the eye can see. Please feel free to read more in my personal blog and see about 20 photos at this link: Photos of Palm Canyon Hike at A...

Because I had researched some of the fabulous places to visit in Borrego Springs beforehand, I already had a somewhat agenda by the time we arrived. Whereas my husband's plan was to ask the park ranger for the up-to-date interesting places to go to view wildflowers. That's a good plan, but one could also miss places where there might not be an abundance of flowers yet fascinating terrain to explore. On our way back to town from Salton Sea, I suggested we pull off the road and drive the 4 miles that typically only an SUV can do to see the Badlands of Southern California. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Photos of Fonts Point at Anza Borrega Desert State Park.

Vacant homes can be shown at any time during daylight hours, as long as the listing agent has put an accessible lockbox on the house.  Homes that are currently occupied by the sellers will need some advance notice so they can leave the house and you can view it privately.  Houses that are occupied by tenants need at least 24 hours’ notice, and sometimes more.  You and your REALTOR® must always be respectful of the residents who live in a house, and must comply with the laws, too.Remember, houses that are occupied may not have a lockbox, which means that your REALTOR® will have to coordinate a showing with the listing agent and/or the residents, and it will be more difficult to view the inside. Why do you need to make sure you have plenty of daylight before viewing houses?  Because it is ...

By Regina P. BrownWhen you walk into a home with a prospective buyer, their eyes are often drawn up and they never notice the floor — unless it’s exceptional. But wouldn’t you agree that whether fabulous or lackluster, flooring sets the tone for a house’s interior design. Subliminally, the floor can make or break a buyer’s first showing. The floor is the basic building frame of a home and insulates from the ground or the story underneath. It provides a comfortable surface for residents to walk upon, as well as aesthetic value. Whether hardwood planks or wall-to-wall carpet, floor coverings can provide a décor base that compliments the ambiance. In today’s topic we will explore the primary types of residential flooring: wood and natural materials, laminate and reconstructed wood, vinyl, ca...

The shiny polished look of granite is being edged out by honed granite which sports a matte finish.  Today’s trendy glass tile and recycled crafted glass surfaces are quickly replacing the standard ceramic tile counter tops.  Other recycled materials include concrete, paper, plastic, and other composites.Laminate solid surfaces, such as Formica®, mimic the high end look of travertine at a fraction of the cost.  The simple contemporary styling of Staron (acrylic) and Radianz (quartz) can lend a luxurious personal touch.  Other custom solid surfaces include Avonite, Swanstone, and Corian®.A butcher block counter hand-crafted from solid wood doubles as a cutting board and offers a warm, welcoming flair.  A custom designed kitchen may feature solid travertine, carrara marble, or exotic ston...

A single family residence (SFR) is a detached stick-built free-standing home that is built as an individually owned home on its own lot (parcel).  It does not share any walls with any other houses.  Also called a “single-detached dwelling” or “detached home”, the building is owned individually and occupied by 1 family unit.  It usually includes an attached or detached garage.  The property may also include a detached mother-in-law suite (granny unit) or a “casita” studio apartment.A single family residence is the simplest type of home construction.  Many home buyers prefer to have a separate, detached home.  An SFR is the most expensive type of home category, but is the easiest type of house on which to get a mortgage loan.Find out more property types in our book, "Buy Your First Home",...
