Catalina Island | Visit Catalina Island Catalina Island is an island located off the Southern California coast. The size of Catalina Island is approximately 22 miles long and 8 miles wide. William Wrigley, Junior was instrumental in the development of Catalina Island, he originally bought the island in 1919 and it was improved with the Casino, a hotel, and the Casino building which is still there,  however it is utilized as a movie theater. There is an airport at the top of the island, and many planes will fly in just for lunch and have a very popular Buffalo burger. And Buffalo do roam the island! Catalina Island is located 32 miles from Newport Beach, and the interesting thing is, there are many days when you don't see it at all due to the fog. Pleasure Pier and Catalina Casino - A Great Combination - Speechless Sundays         Another gorgeous day on Catalina Island with the Green Pleasure Pier (isn't that a great name?) in the forefront and the Catalina Casino in the background.   I even got a little time in the beautiful blue water today while watching others play. 09/26/2010

The Catalina Flyer is Off for Maintenance - However, the Catalina Adventure is Here    The Catalina Flyer leaves from Newport Beach and goes to Catalina Island for a wonderful day of adventure in Avalon.   It is temporarily off duty for maintenance.  However, I took the Catalina Adventure to Catalina today, and it was a lot of fun. It is significantly smaller than the Catalina Flyer and for now no bikes or coolers are allowed due to space restrictions.  For me, the joy of being out on the bow enjoying the wind and watching and actually feeling the waves, more than made up for the difference in size.   So, if you're planning on taking a trip to Catalina, you can still go from Newport Beach and enjoy the new, temporary catamarand. 09/26/2010
