Information from Pitt River Quarries will be given at a public meeting in Pitt Meadows on Wednesday evening about a possible expansion of its operations. The application by Pitt River Quarries is to expand the quarry to 70.5 hectares from its current 54.7 hectares which would increase production to two million tons per year. The expansion of the Pitt River Quarries Pitt Meadows mine would come to within 100 metres of the nearest homes. There will be a representative from the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources at the Pitt Meadows public meeting. Pitt River Quarries  will also have new drawings and models of the Pitt Meadows area. After a stretch that saw Pitt Meadows dominate the AAA north basketball league for more than a month, the Pitt Meadows Marauders Air Force finally lost a basketball game to archrival and host team Vancouver College Fighting Irish in the championship game of the Emerald Tournament on Saturday. A recent survey asking young people in Pitt Meadows what they would like to see improved in their community showed overwhelming support for a new skate park. The old Pitt Meadows Skate Park was demolished in 2008 to make way for a 140-stall parking garage, part of the city's downtown redevelopment 46 per cent of the more than 400 students pitt meadows students in Grades 6 to 12 who took part in survey asked for the skate park to be replaced. A petition has also been set up on the social networking website Facebook and already has close to 200 supporters. Ridge Meadows Parks and Leisure Services said the new park, which would also be open to BMX cycling and rollerbladers, is coming, and community consultations will begin next year. The sudden closure of Pitt Meadows independent school Greybrook Academy last week could have been prevented with some basic regulation and oversight, says local NDP MLA Michael Sather. He would like to see changes made to the provincial legislation that governs independent schools, to make them more transparent and accountable to parents. "It's amazing there are so few requirements ... there's almost no oversight," Sather said. "It's a recipe for disaster." He would like to see all independent schools that receive tax dollars to file publicly-available audited financial statements, and include parental representation on their boards. I had just nicely come home from a beautiful morning spent showing some waterfront & water access only property on Pitt Lake when I saw the headline in the Maple Ridge Times newspaper. The Pitt Lake Web Cam is located at the Pitt River Lodge which is at the very North end of the real estate at Pitt Lake BC near the upper Pitt River where it flows into the lake on the waterfront. Streams flowing to the Upper Pitt River in Pitt Meadows will run free after B.C. Hydro scratched Run of River Power Inc'.s plans to put small dams and turbines on eight Pitt Meadows streams north of Pitt Lake. After receiving 68 proposals for clean power, B.C. Hydro this week shortened that list to 21. The proposal for the Upper Pitt Lake was not on the list. Now I believe the main reason that the project was scraped was the lack of community support. Pitt Meadows Residents were very vocal on this issue. The proposal created a firestorm of opposition in 2007, leading to two heated meetings in Pitt Meadows as environmentalists opposed Run or River Power Inc.'s plans.
