Camp Verde, AZ - Montezuma's Castle got its name from early settlers in the area. They thought that this was built by Montezuma (the Aztec mythical hero). In fact, it was built by the Sinagua between 1100 to 1350 A.D. By 1425 A.D., the Sinagua were gone. They were hunters and farmers. Modern theory is they left because the natural resources became depleted. Verde Valley residents normally think of Montezuma's Castle when cliff dwelling is mentioned.
