Abdul Malik was born in South Surma, British India back in 1929 to Molvi and Syeda.  He attended the Sylhet Government Pilot High School in 1947.  After graduation he was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College passing in 1954 with a MBBS. In 1955, he joined the Pakistan Army Medical Corps.  He continued his education at the Royal College of Physicians and at the Hammersmith Hospital, his Post Graduate Medical School, London.  He returned to Pakistan in 1966.  In 1966, he established the first cardiac unit in Pakistan at the Military Hospital, Rawalpindl.  He served as Professor of Cardiology at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from 1970-78. Joseph Beverly MacInnis was born in Barrie, Ontario, Canada back in 1937.  The family moved to Toronto after his father died in a plane crash when he was a few months old.  He attended high school at the Upper Canada College.  He continued his education at the University of Toronto where he held the Canadian record for the breaststroke.  He graduated with a MD in 1962.He spent his internship at the Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  In 1963, he met Edwin Link at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.  at that meeting he offered Joseph a position as the full-time doctor for his Man-In-Sea Project.  By 1965, he became the medical director of Link’s new company, Ocean Systems Inc.  In 1967, Link launched Deep Diver the first small submersible designed for l...

James Smith McDonnell was born in Denver, Colorado back in 1899. He was raised in Little Rock, Arkansas graduating from Little Rock High School in 1917. He continued his education at Princeton University graduating in 1921, with a Master’s of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT in 1925.After graduation, he started working for Stout Metal Airplane Division of the Ford Motor Company.  in 1931, he was hired as an engineer for the Glenn L. Martin Company resigning in 1938.  He later served as chairman of the United Nations Association of the United States.  In 1980, he was awarded the NAS Award in Aeronautical Engineering for the National Academy of Sciences. Eduardo Liceaga was born in Guanajuato City, Mexico back in 1839 to Francisco and Trinidad.  He received his education at the old College of San Gregorio, Mexico City and later at the College of the State of Guanajuato.  He took first prize in Latin, winning prizes and honorable mention.His medical education was at the National School of Medicine in Mexico City, graduating in 1866.  Emperor Maximillian bestowed on him the degree of Surgeon and a gold medal.  He taught surgery in his alma mater becoming its director, serving from 1904 to 1910.  In 1913, he was made honorary director.  He worked for twenty-five years as the director of the Maternity and Infant Hospital.What you may not know about Dr. Liceaga is that he is known as the “most distinguished hygienist of the late-nineteenth c...

Charles Leiper Grigg was born in Prices Branch, Missouri back in 1868 to Charles and Mary.  When he turned 22 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he began working in the advertising field. By 1919, he was working as a salesman for a manufacturing company owned by Vess Jonea.  While working with Jonea he invented and marketed his first soft drink called “Whistle”.  The success of the drink led to his promotion to the marketing manager, however he and Jonea did not get along, he left the company, leaving Whistle behind. Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., was born in Chicago, Illinois back in 1935.  He attended Haines Elementary School, graduating when he was sixteen in the top 10% from Englewood High School in 1952.  He continued his education graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Bradley University.  While at Bradley he distinguished himself as Cadet Commander in the Air Force ROTC program receiving a commission of second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve Program.  At the age of 21 he was designated as a U.S. Air Force pilot upon completing flight training at Malden Air Force Base, Missouri.  In 1965, he earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Ohio State University. Earnest Orlando Lawrence was born in Canton, South Carolina back in 1901 to Carl and Gunda.  He attended schools at Canton and Pierre, after graduation he enrolled at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.  He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1922.  He then enrolled at the University of Minnesota receiving his Master of Arts degree in physics in 1923.He moved to New Haven, Connecticut where he completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics in 1925.  With Jesse Beams from the University of Virginia he continued his research in the photoelectric field.  He was hired as an associate professor of physics and the University of California in 1928, two years later he became a full professor.  After the outbreak of World War II, he was drawn into military projects.  W...

Wallace Hume Carothers was born in Burlington, Iowa back in 1896 to Ira and Mary.  He attended school in Des Moines, Iowa.  After graduation he attended Capital City Commercial College, completing the accounting and secretarial curriculum in 1915.  That same year he entered the Tarkio College in Missouri.He initially majored in English but switched to chemistry.  He so excelled in chemistry that before he graduated he was made a chemistry instructor and studied as well.  After graduating with a bachelor of science degree he attended the University of Illinois for his master of arts degree graduating in 1921.  He went back to the University of Illinois to study for his Ph.D.  he received that degree in 1924.  After getting his Ph.D. he stayed at the University of Illinois for two years a...

Thomas Oliver Larkin was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts back in 1802 to Thomas and Ann.  When he was 15 he went to Boston to apprentice as a bookbinder.  In 1821, he moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where he worked as a clerk.  In 1825, he opened a store in Duplin, North Carolina. He moved again to San Francisco in 1832.  He built the first two-story house in California, it’s still standing at the Monterey State Historic Park.  He also built the first wharf at Monterey harbor.  He acquired several land grants around Rancho Jimeno, Rancho Boga, Rancho Cienega del Rabilan, Rancho Pleyto and Rancho Cotate.  In 1858, he contracted typhoid fever and died within a week.  What you may not know about Thomas is that he was appointed to be the United States first and only consul to Mexican...

Richard Edmund LaMotta was born in Brooklyn, New York back in 1942 to Joseph and Mary.  He graduated from the Brooklyn Technical High School.  After graduation, he continued his education at Brooklyn College earning a B.S. in Economics.  He then earned a J.D. from the New York Law School.As a college freshman he developed his own record label. Lucy Craft Laney was born in Macon, Georgia back in 1854 to David and Louisa.  At the age of four she could read, she attended Lewis High School in Macon.  After graduation she attended Atlanta University graduating in 1873.  She worked as a teacher in Macon, Milledgeville and Savanah, Georgia.After 10 years working as a teacher she opened the now call Lucy Craft Laney High School in 1883.  By 1928 it had more than 800 students, the school also served as a community center. Elizabeth Kortright was born in New York City, New York back in 1768 to Lawrence and Hannah.  At nine her mother died and her father never remarried.  Elizabeth first met James while he was serving as a member of the Continental Congress.  The couple were married in February of 1786 in New York City.  In December she gave birth to Eliza.James was appointed United States Minister to France.  While in France she helped secure the release of Madame La Fayette and gave shelter to Thomas Paine while he was in Paris. Emil Theodor Kocher was born in Bern, Switzerland back in 1841 to Jakob and Barbara.  The family moved to Burgdorf, he moved back to Bern where he went to middle and high school.  He started his studies in 1858 at the University of Bern.  He obtained his doctorate in 1865.  At 30 you could find him as a professor at the University of Bern.He served in that capacity for 45 years. Marie-Claire Kirkland was born back in 1924 in Palmer, Massachusetts to Charles and Rose.  I didn’t find much of her childhood.  So, let’s cut to the chase.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947, her Bachelor of Civil Law in 1950 from McGill University.  She became a judge in 1973, retiring in 1991.  She died in 2016, she was 91.What you may not know about Marie-Claire Kirkland-Casgrain is that she was the first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, the first woman appointed a Cabinet minister in Quebec, the first woman appointed acting premier and the first woman judge to serve in the Quebec Provincial Court. Pauline Kirby was born in Greenwood, Mississippi back in 1905.  She attended Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee graduating in 1926.  She enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1927, assigned to Fort Sam Houston Hospital.  From 1942 to 1945 she was the Assistant Director of Nurses in the South West Pacific during WWII.After the war she was assigned to the Northington General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL, moving onward to Moore General Hospital Ashville, NC.  In 1947, she was the Chief Nurse at Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek, MI.  in 1954, she was transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center.  In 1957 she was recognized as one of the eight army nurses that cared for President Dwight D. Arthur Atwater Kent Sr. was born in Burlington, Vermont back in 1873.  The family moved to Worchester, Massachusetts in 1881.  He entered Worchester Polytechnic Institute majoring in mechanical engineering.  He excelled in mechanics and drawing, but he was weak in chemistry, algebra and language, having no interest in those subjects.He started the Kent Electric Manufacturing Company where he sold electric motors and generators.  In 1921, he was producing radio components.  His business was so successful he built a plant that eventually covered 32 acres in North Philadelphia.  By 1925 it was the largest maker of radios in the United States, employing over 12,00 workers.
