Adolph Gysbert Malan was born in Wellington, Cape Colony in South Africa back in 1910.  At the age of 14 he joined the South African Training Ship General Botha as a naval cadet in 1924.  In 1932 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve as an acting sub-lieutenant, by 1935 he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant.Later on, that year he volunteered for the Royal Air Force in its rapid expansion of the pilot corps.  He received his wings in March of 1936.  By 1939, he was promoted to flight lieutenant just six months before the outbreak of war.  Just 15 hours after war was declared he saw his first action during the Battle of Barking Creek.  He was involved in the evacuation of the British Army from Dunkirk.  For his actions, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.   In August of 1940 he w...

Andrew Donald Magee was born in Paris, France back in 1962.  His father was a Texas oil man, he grew up in Dallas, Texas.  After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Oklahoma from 1981-84.  While in college he distinguished himself as a member of the golf team.  We won All-American honors three times.In 1984, he turned pro and joined the PGA Tour in 1985.  During his career he won four PGA Tour events.  The first on in 1988 at the Pensacola Open.  His best finish in a major was tied for fifth at the 1992 British Open.  He is featured in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Charles Blair Macdonald was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario to naturalized American parents.  He grew up in Chicago.  In 1872, he was sent to St. Andrews University, while there he took up playing golf with a vengeance.  He returned to Chicago in 1874 becoming a stockbroker for the next 17 years.In 1894, the Newport Country Club and Saint Andrew’s Golf Club held a “national championship” where he finished in second place.  He founded the Chicago Golf Club where he helped build the nine hold rudimentary holes in Downers Grove, Illinois.  That course comprised the first golf course west of the Allegheny Mountains. Lynch was born in Baltimore, Maryland back in 1839.  After his early education he attended Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire.  After two year he moved to Indianapolis where he committed himself to the ministry. Aleda Ester Lutz was born in Freeland, Michigan back in 1915 to Friederich and Margaretha.  She attended the Wellman Country School before graduating from Saginaw Arthur Hill High School in 1933.  She attended the Saginaw General Hospital of Nursing graduating in 1937.  After graduation she became a staff nurse at Saginaw General Hospital.  After the attack at Pearl Harbor she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1942, commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant.  She was stationed at the Station Hospital in Michigan before volunteering as an Air Evacuation Nurse.  Out of the 22 nurses to volunteer she was only one of three that passed the physical. Bernard Lown was born in Utena, Lithuania back in 1921 to Nison and Bela.  The family moved to Maine when he was 14.  He attended Lewiston High School graduating in 1938.  He continued his education at the University of Maine graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1942.  He earned his M.D. from John Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1945.  He received his cardiology fellowship at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.  He helped raise international awareness of sudden cardiac death as a leading cause of mortality.  Based on his observation he concluded that sudden cardiac death was reversible and survivable.  Back then the mortality of a heart attack was most likely due to a strict regimen of bed rest which caused a pulmonary embolism accounting for most of the deaths.  He died in 2021...
