If you cannot read the DOT signs ("Caution", "Speed Limit",
"All Traffic Must Exit Right", etc.) then you have no business operating a motor vehicle on our roadways.

Richie & You - Assimilation is the KEY!

UPDATE:  This will not create barriers for some drivers. Those seeking the license created the barriers by not learning English.

The goal here is to assimulate not accommodate.

Everyone benefits from assimilation. There is power when we all agree. NOTE: E PLURIBUS UNUM or out of the many, one is our core value

When I was taking my driving test in FL several years ago, there was a gentleman next to me. He had a person next to him interpreting the test for him. Was he giving the person the answers? I have no idea...my Spanish is limited.

Politics aside...how about catching, locking up, fining whatever the drivers on the road, legal, not legal, Proficient in English or not...if they are driving recklessly or drunk or both.

Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 - I think it's about time! It's all about assimilation for any and all countries. My daughter could not drive until she learned German in Switzerland. She continuously is required by her employer to take more advanced German. Before Christmas she had to take statistics and an advanced financial class. If she doesn't keep learning and passing, she doesn't stay.

I'd be amazed if they pull this off Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 . English is the official language in the USA but this will create certain koas.

Signs are in English, the test should be in English.  Safety matters.

I also understand they want to outlaw the use of Arabic numbers on the speed limit and mileage signs.

Shouldn't matter. Signs, speedometers, license plates, registrations, etc are all in English around here. They've already added images to many signs. I doubt if they do much more.

Sounds consistent with Florida’s political climate. Language is also a political instrument - a means and proof of power. Public safety can be addressed without shutting doors to entire communities.  If the goal is public safety, there are ways to strengthen standards without reducing access. The ripple effects will tell the real story - good or bad remains to be seen.

That's fair. All states need to adopt this standard.

When you go to a foreign country, you are expected to learn the language and if you decide to drive without clear understanding, you put everyone else on the road at risk.

Perhaps, it will cut down on the number of vehicular homicides on public roads due to licenses being handed out like business cards at a marketing event. If you are against this, think of the families who have already lost loved ones because of the recklessness.

In the NC test we have to identify the signs by their shape and symbols, not what is written on them. The reasoning here is so that you can make adjustments before you are close enough to read the words on the sign.

A lot of  American citizens who only speak some form of English can not read. I guess they don't count.

Are you kidding? If you can't read English you should not be driving here! Plus, you can Google a free translation.

Now the signs' shapes and colors are a clue . . . but sighhhh . . . yall should have a basic knowledge of the language IN THE COUNTRY YOU LIVE OR WISH TO LIVE.

This is not rocket science!

I think it will create barriers and decrease safety.  People that are not proficient in English will fail the test or not even take the test in the first place so that is the barrier. Some of the people will still be out there driving around with no license, no English, no insurance which will lead to a decrease in safety.

As one who was in a an accident caused by an undocumented unlicensed person with dubious insurance issued by some store front hoax in downtown  Chicago, I am in favor of no English, no license. The law abiding police let her go and I was left to settle with my insurance company, Then again it was Chicago!

Home again, home again...

I think the bulk of these signs can be read, or at least understood, without the need to read/understand English. It seems to be placing an unnecessary impediment.

Illegal driving is a CHOICE you make, regardless of what language you speak. If you disregard the law of the Country you live in, you face consequences.

Only in America, where Americans are expected to tolerate and accept all special interest groups as a majority opinion, could you NOT speak the language and expect ALL the benefits, like a driver's license.

Not many other Countries in the World even care about individual safety. Try driving in a foreign county, see what happens when you are stopped without a license. For those who have travelled, driving in some, not all foreign countries is like a mad maxx race.

If I moved to a foreign Country, pretty sure the Authorities and Law would make me learn their language to survive and thrive.

I am confused by anyone who protests the requirement to learn the language of the country where you live. And really confused how Americans continue to argue with each other over common sense laws. United We Stand.

Designated brokers send brand newly licensed agents out on the real estate highway of life without supervision or communication for the rest of us to teach them the lingo.

Commercial airline pilots need to be level 4 English proficient to "drive", fly a plane. Even when you know English, if the ATC tower man or woman speaks rapid fire fast with a Long Island accent or southern drawl, etc with no patience, communication breaks down.

Everyone wonders "what did he / she just say" as the air traffic  controller winds up, gets angrier, louder, very short.

Harrison Ford knows pretty good English from memorizing his movie script lines. Passed his pilot's license to fly. But mishaps still can happen Katina Hargrove 352-551-0308 .  Just knowing English is not always enough behind the wheel.
