It's a local tax, so we truly see where are money is going (or not). It is ad valorem, so we choose what we are willing to pay. It is used to support us pretty much daily (police, fire, education) and I live in CA where housing costs are high, so tax amounts are above average, but so are wages and salaries.

I'm for it... especially for seniors. I'd rather pay it in a sales tax.

I believe property taxes should be regressive. You pay more when you are young, then as you age, taxes would go down. At a certain age (70 or so) they would reach 0 and stay that way until you die.
I think that's fair, because young people use more of the services taxes pay for, plus, it would safeguard the elderly from losing their homes to unpaid taxes.

I have wrote letters to our State representatives encouraging them to abolish property taxes Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate . There has been a strong, organized effort here and I have been part of it from the beginning. How ridiculous is it that we pay property taxes for (in my case) over 50 years and yet if my health should fail the government would throw me out in the street to die?
BTW I paid my house off 14 years ago yet I'm still paying that tax. You NEVER own your home, the government see to that.

Government and education funding are black holes. There will never be enough tax dollars to satisfy their voracious appetites.

If property taxes were removed, where would the money come from to pay for what property taxes pay for?
Asking for a friend.

You ask a good question, I have a friend that mentioned, but I have not done any research on it. So many variables to property taxes, like fire tax, school tax, etc. How would it affect tax deeds, back taxes, tax certificates, waterfront properties, etc. Will the sales tax go up instead and will it be a cap? If it was up to me, I would make it a flat property tax for all. Just my two cents in the pot:) Katina

CA will never agree to let property tax go . Our Gov recently went opposite way. Here's some numbers for those who are curious:
In Los Angeles County, property taxes are primarily determined by the assessed value of the property, with additional taxes applicable to high-end homes.
Regular Homes:
-
Assessed Value and Tax Rate: California Proposition 13 limits the property tax rate to 1% of the assessed value, plus any voter-approved local taxes and bonds.
-
Variations by Area: Property tax rates can vary slightly depending on specific Tax Rate Areas (TRAs) within the county, influenced by local bonds and voter-approved taxes.
High-End Homes:
-
Mansion Tax: As of April 1, 2023, the City of Los Angeles implemented Measure ULA, introducing an additional "mansion tax" on high-end property sales.
-
4% on sales priced between $5 million and $9,999,999.99.
-
5.5% on sales of $10 million and above.

Property taxes prevent any type of true Freedom & Liberty - if you can't own your home without paying rent (real estate tax) every year - at the threat of your home being taken from you - then you're not truly free, and you don't truly own anything. Property tax should be abolished everywhere.

In bedroom communities, property taxes are the major source of income for maintaining town services, such as public schools, etc. Where does Florida expect to get the revenue that would be lost if property taxes were abolished? I don't see it happening.

As long as we have property taxes, we will never truly own our homes. You can pay off the mortgage, but if you miss a tax payment the county will sell off the house you paid for with money you were already taxed on. How is that sensible?
We should do away with property taxes and income tax. Especially for seniors.

Ah, property taxes—America's favorite way to remind us that owning a home has its downsides! Honestly, it’s like paying a monthly subscription for the privilege of having a roof over our heads. If you ask me, abolishing property taxes is a fantastic idea. Why should we fork over more cash just because our home value decides to take a joyride up the market? It's like getting a raise and finding out you owe the tax man more than you can count!
Now, I get it—local governments need money, but there’s got to be a better way than to keep hitting homeowners where it hurts most—our ATM machines. Imagine a world where people can actually enjoy their homes without cringing at the tax bill in the mail. It could lead to a more vibrant real estate market, too. After all, who wouldn’t want to invest in a home without the hefty tax anchor dragging them down.
So, let’s rally for that abolition! If we’re going to pay for a piece of the American Dream, let’s keep it dream-like and not a waking nightmare of tax bills! What do you think? Wouldn't that be something to celebrate?

Someone has to pay for street lights, schools, road work, police, firemen...

Without reviewing a plan to replace the money collected I have no opinion. It sounds good but so do many things that turn horribly wrong. Some tax relief for seniors would have to be included in any plan I would endorse.

We are on the fast road toward becoming a third world country, no schools, no roads, no services of any kind.

it's the only tax I don't mind paying. It funds fire, ambulance, law enforcement, maintains local roads and educates local children.

While I'm never excited to see my property tax bill, I do very much support what it funds. Maryland's schools are among the top 10 in the country. Having raised two children who have benefitted from the stellar education system in our county (again, among the top), I'm okay with it. It's a case of you getting what you pay for, isn't it? How else could education and first responder services be funded if not through taxes?

If property taxes go away, the states will find another way to make money. They need the money for schools, roads and more.
