Shop class was a required class for the boys. The girls were required to take Home Economics.  I was fortunate to marry a man who grew up on a farm and was very handy around the house. I helped him roof an addition to one of our houses many years ago and I was good at handing him tools on other projects.

My dad was quite handy.  Me, not so much - as in "all thumbs".  I did take the required shop classes in junior high school which also included a drafting class I anxiously anticipated. That teacher, Mr Warren shouldn't have been in a classroom.  Still remember, many, many decades later.

I knew directions how to get to our local hardware store and I liked going but was kinda lost skill-wise.  My handiness is less-than-limited.

I have painted a house in/out, I have put in forms for concrete, I have mixed and poured and smoothed concrete, I have installed insulation, I have placed sheathing, installed flooring, built and installed walls and more. I can garden, cook, clean, sew, crochet, start a fire, clean a clogged drain, use a chainsaw and all sorts of woodworking tools. I am fairly useful to have around but there's a lot still to learn!

I only learned a few of those growing up. Most were found out as an adult.

PS - one of the most important things my dad taught me while growing up had to do with some of these things I just mentioned. He said, if it won't fit, don't force it. Take a breath, look at it again, and figure out why it won't go. Great words of advice that can fit to all sorts of situations!

Auto & radio shop in high school of which I understood nothing as I wasn't ready for what it provides. As to working with my hands, all thumbs yet I can do tasks often having to redo or not done, correctly. Now, I outsource. It is well to know what we can AND what we cannot do & go from there

I was not handy growing up. My dad was not either. He had a great circle of friends when help was needed. So now I simply pay others to apply their skills for repairs, etc.

I did take shop classes in high school! Learned woodworking and leather working. I have installed window treatments, not a window, I think I would hire someone expert for that. I have changed a tire but in a much smaller vehicle, IDK if I could change a 4 x 4 truck tire so good thing I have AAA Platinum!
There are A LOT of things I am able to do around my house. Even when my husband was alive, I enjoyed being the 'VP in charge of everything' and he would help when not working 50 hours a week but I would also want it done 'this millennium' LOL
So I am fairly handy and yet conscious of NOT causing injury to myself requiring even more chiro and acupuncture than usual! (still rehabbing a soft tissue injury conditioning my evap cooler from LAST Fall LOL!)

I am not handy at all, I mainly played basketball as a kid, haha.  I did take a woodworking class and made some stuff, but that is the extent of my experience, haha.

Raise in a military family - started working with a work permit at 15.5 and have not stopped working, and learning how to do things.  As a homeowner,  I continue to learn how to do and fix things.

High School - I took drafting.

I was thinking growing up the shop class was only for the boys.   I have learned many things - can paint pretty well, installed a disposal, helped tile a floor and think that is about it.  I usually call a professional, then it doesn't take all day to get something done.

I did all of those things, plus took bricklaying classes in high school. At 12 years old I was changing oil furnace filters, priming pumps, rebuildlng lawn mower and mini bike engines, helping with sheetrock, insulating attics, and putting shingles on roofs, etc.

I took computer stuff in high school.  They had shop class, but that wasn't my thing.  Being a freshman hanging out with the varsity cheerleaders in the computer class was a lot more fun.  :)  Especially when they said hi to me by name in front of the rest of my freshman classmates... on game day.  Yeah, I was suddenly the BMOC (at least in the freshman class).

I'm more handy now than I was then, mainly because I now see the fun in it.

Hi Andrew- I learned by watching my grandmother cook and my mother bake as well as a few Girl Scout activites. My husband can do just about anything but he didn't learn it from his father. He is by nature curious. Last week he changed all the brakes on one of our cars...thanks to YouTube!!! Thankfully he's given up wanting to build his own plane.

I took wood shop. I think my sister still has a table I made in woodshop. I think I remember it being better than it is. I'm not handy but my husband is. Some people are just naturally inclined in that direction. Now kids have Youtube videos and that helps a lot. I can do some things but I would say I'm "handy".
