   How do you feel?  It depends... I attended a very large church; there were 8 or 9 residential Realtors there.   Most of them very good, very professional.  So when a fellow church member chose one of them over me, no hurt feelings, no offense.

  But when a blood relative, in my town, bought from a complete stranger?  And they had no valid, justifiable reason.  They admitted they did not know that Agent, they just pulled her name from an advertisement or a sign or something.   

I tried to brush it off, "Cousin John works for the Government, he is just another petty bureaucrat who has no idea what it's like to run a business, he just doesn't understand".   But no, that didn't work.  You try to forgive and forget, but there is always bad blood over that event.  Please don't invite me to any family dinner or football watch party at THAT HOUSE, because I will not attend.

Nope. I don't want those. 

One person I never spoke to again.

Another is still a best bud; we chatted about it and their reason made sense.

Another one I just rolled my eyes because it wasn't out of character.

I think our reaction has to be on a case-by-case basis.

I have often referred friends to other agents.  Sometimes it's best not to mix the two.  Depends on the friendship.

Yeah it sucks, do this long enough and we have all had it happen.  Question is, were we in touch with them, did we ask them about their 2024 real estate needs?   Or did we assume they would be obligated to simply hire us?

Just move on, I've had this happen and I'm sure they have their reasons. I need not know their excuses!

It does hurt but move on, don’t do anything different but reaffirm you can do it better.

Yep, and I take ownership if I felt it was on me for lack of communication, but when it was just the character and decision of that person, I have to let it go. I give myself 1 hour to either walk it off, nap it off or drum it off and then I move on. 

It is so much negative energy ... it speaks volumes more about that person's character than it does mine.  Let go and move on to better, happier things. 

Richie the one I had several years back made me very glad that they jumped ship because they were a pain to deal with and their agent let me know that!  I had the feeling the dude was a bit of a jerk.  Listen to what they say and how they say........don't' give in to fairy tails.

Yes, a relative long ago went with another agent in the same office I worked. It was NOT painful, but I did wonder as to why. It was kind of a relief for me. Basically I wished them the best and moved on:) Katina

I learned to ignore them. You can only guess the reasons. I've had family members buy and sell homes 3-4 times and never asked me about listing them. I could guess that they didn't want other family members knowing the personal financial situation. Actually, that family member actually listed one of their house with another agent I worked with.

I have never cared to work with immediate family Richie Alan Naggar BUT what bothered me was relatives not saying "my brother Robert Timm sent me over so please see he gets a referral fee". I've informed them that it costs them nothing and I, their brother receives a commission for it. I may have even mentioned Christmas is coming and I could afford to buy them a present if they did. 😄

I had one who interviewed several agents, and decided to go with a different agent whose statistics were better than mine.  He told her that he had a 100% list to sale ratio (ie: he sold all of his listings for full price).  She was impressed by that.  Mine was only 86%.

Well, I looked him up, and sure enough, he was right.  The single listing that he'd had (that's right, he'd only ever had ONE listing) he sold for full price in a few days, because he'd dramatically under-priced it.

I just shook my head.  They deserved each other.

It hurts and it makes you a little angry, but we need to let it go and maybe think of it as a bullet dodged. Sometimes sellers want to have the freedom to reconsider their choice or agent (read fire the agent) and it would be awkward with a friend.

I usually send a congratulations message to let them know that I'm aware of being stabbed in the back.

Sometimes you just have to move on. Once, a friend used another agent and then came to me for legal representation. OK. I would not have represented him as both and the factors were such that he needed legal representation. 

A feeling of betrayal, and makes you wonder if you failed in explaining your value to them.
