My understanding of Christian history, is that you cleansed your house of butter, sugar, fat, lard, etc. on the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent).  

The best way to get rid of those ingredients was to consume them, so families would eat donuts, bread, pastries.

     Fastnacht is in conjunction with, or in some cultures instead of, Shrove Tuesday.  You may also hear it called "Pancake Tuesday".

But like most "religious" holidays, Fastnacht has evolved (or some would say devolved) into a party / festival happy time, in this case, "Fat Tuesday".

Fastnacht Day 2023 is Tuesday, February 21st. This food holiday is also known as Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, or Shrove Tuesday, which is why the delicious treats are often referred to as "Mardi Gras donuts". Fasnacht Day is the last day before Lent, the 40-day season before Easter begins on Ash Wednesday.

Pancake Tuesday is a big charity day up here with pancakes being served in almost all churches, restaurants, boy scouts halls etc.  HUGE up here!
