My brother has lived like this in rural Saskatchewan since he retired from the air force 35 years ago.  He despises cattle though, so he barters for meat and milk, lol   His wife makes their own bread and butter, preserves everything and makes their clothes too.  When visiting, it is truly like being in Little House on the Prairie.  They progressed to solar power recently as my brother could play Dr. Emmett Brown on Back to the Future ha ha

I remember their two boys being teased at school for not knowing what Pepsi and Cheezits were. (They used to trade their homemade bread sandwiches & cookies for store bought from the other kids!)   I made sure they were then kept current with clothing and pop culture thereafter and my brother understood, to prevent them from being bullied.   Mind you, two healthier strapping lads were not to be found!!!

It's an interesting life that he's most welcome to keep.  A nice place to visit but I couldn't ever live there.

If you think real estate is hard, I suggest NOT taking this path of self-sufficiency.
Could I do it? Yes. If it was a do or die situation.
Will I do it? No. But embracing a few 'prepper' or 'hurricane readiness' disciplines is a good idea.

My Grandfather did but as a young boy I did not like the farm work and as an adult, I don't think I would want to do it either.  I would love to live in that sort of situation but to be honest I wouldn't be up to doing the work myself, haha.

I do like the idea of growing vegetables and gathering eggs but not doing real farming -at the exclusion of all else...  Because that certainly is a full-time endeavor!

Nope... no way, no how. I was raised in the concrete jungle of New York City. This kind of life or any life not in or very near an urban center has never held any interest for me. No outward city migration for me!

I used to think that I would at least enjoy a few acres to have a large garden and several fruit trees.  I think those days have passed me by and that I will be fine with a small garden and maybe two fruit trees.  I think the dream sounds better than the reality (and the work that goes with it).

NO! I have watched a lot of the TV programs Life Below Zero and Port Protection. I respect those who choose to live that life but I could not.  I could not and I would not want to.

For our next home we plan to be a little more self-sufficient (solar power, some chickens, hopefully a greenhouse and some raised bed/container gardening), but full scale farming is way beyond anything I'd ever want to take on.

When I was in my single digits I was a tomato picker during the summer. Low pay, no days off, paid by the bushel and not the hour it was hard for a kid but gave me some mad money and some to save. At quitting time the farmer's day was about half finished. I always appreciated their efforts but I could not do it anymore.

I have to admit, although I live in the county now, I am a little bit city and a little county and do not have a green thumb ... this really does not even sound like fun. Now, having said all that, if I had to do this to stay alive, I could do it "maybe"

We partially lived that life as kids, we raised livestock for food and for profit and grew vegetables for our consumption at one point, but supplemented with Safeway LOL...
A true farm and multi-generations under one roof would never work with my family, we're a tribe of wandering souls and transient explorers. We don't stay put!

We garden and make homemade meals but there is no desire to take on backbreaking chores anymore. Ringing chicken's necks, cutting their heads off and chasing after them when they get their legs under them does not appeal to me. Though it was done as a child!

At 73, probably not by myself. There is a lot that goes into farming that people are not aware of. It is a 24/7/365 operation

I worked many days in my youth on a family ranch. Picking grapes, picking prunes, cutting down trees sawing them up and splitting the logs to be burned in the cast iron stove (there was also an electric stove in the large kitchen) and for burning in the furnace in the other end of the house (there was no other heating source). I harvested eggs from the hundreds of checkings that were raised for eggs and table.

Great memories.

While I had that early experience part-time, I grew up in a suburban environment and I am truly a city boy.

This would not be my cup of tea - or block of wood!  Maybe 40 years ago I'd give it some thought but I still highly doubt it.   I do know folks that have their own farms and they love the lifestyle.

Not easy and I give our farmers a lot of credit for the hard work that they do. I support them as much as I can. I do like to grow vegetables and flowers and love the end results but farming I wouldn't be able to do.
