I would use an external drive, this way you have the bonus of the data being backed up in the drive.

The easiest way is to have them both on the same network and share out the C drive and/or the documents folder.
From the new computer, go to Start, Run and type in "\\<old computer's name>\c$" (MS usually has this as a default hidden share for the C drive). If you shared out the documents you'd replace the "C$" with "Documents" or whatever you named the share.
To share a folder, go one up from the folder you want to share (for example for the Documents folder, you'd go to the User folder (usually the name of the account). Then right click the folder, select properties, then go to the "Sharing" tab. This will show you the path that you'd put on the new computer in that run box. From here, click the share button, then add "everyone" with full control permissions (this will allow you to move the files rather than copy them).
If you have a lot of files, or some very large ones, this will be the simplest way to transfer them. You setup the copy/move and walk away. No need to do multiple trips with a USB device or spend money to buy one. The speed of the transfer is only limited by the speed of your network/wifi/lan cables/etc.

I have always used either a thumb drive or an external hard drive Fred Griffin Florida Real Estate . It just depends on what I want to transfer. By using a thumb drive I look at each file and determine "do I really need that".

Whenever I get a new computer, my computer guy transfers everything to an external drive and then uploads it to the new computer.

Belkin Easy Transfer cable if the computers are the same model, iOS and very close in age. I have most all backed up to Seagate externals. That could be the easiest way for you.
