1992 - Motel 6 definitely the cheapest I ever stayed in - behind the MGM Grand Las Vegas. I was in Vegas 3 nights for my best friend's birthday, my own birthday and to DJ a buddy's wedding at The Mirage Hotel (that was a lot of celebrating) and only slept in the room 1 night. 😎Vegas baby!

Motel 6...back when the rooms were $6/night. It was for a meeting and the room was shared with a friend so the room was practically free.

When I worked for Corporate America and traveled all over the US and Internationally, I stayed in the finest hotels with exceptional service. I cannot say the rooms were "free" because I paid for them in my labor for the companies.
The least expensive hotel I paid for would have been Motel 6 - before Tom Bodett left the lights on. Always clean and affordable.
Since then, when I did travel for personal reasons, I said in nice hotels. Life is just too short not to.

This question feels like a trap! Haha, kidding. The cheapest room I had was FREE...well sort of. Our flight to Hong Kong had an emergency diversion to Manila (due to a typhoon). The airlines put us up for "FREE" but the hotel hadn't been used in months...they opened it up for everyone who was on the flight. The towels hanging on the towel racks were literally as hard as cardboard amidst a musty room. We were so tired (and so happy to have landed safely amidst such brutal turbulence) that we slept like babies.

Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River. Clean, nice but rustic. Definately not the Hilton.

Motel 6 I'm sure. We often look for the cheapest when we're traving cross country and only taking a nap there before we hit the road again.

Though I seldom stay in hotels, most of those that I stayed in were as cheap as I could find. As far as enjoyment goes, if my wife is along on the trip it is always enjoyable.

A 10 foot by ten glass greenhouse in Big Sur that leaked moisture. Cost $15. Sun shower was rather heavenly- wood fence enclosure with a plastic bag above, pull the rope cord and it sprinkled. Views of the rocky cliffs to the ocean and redwood forest. Best part was after hiking the kids and I slept in two open sleeping bags listening to the sea.

Cheapest was the creepiest, not enjoyable! One night at a motel with my mother and 2 small children, where you could see the light coming in from all sides around the outline of the door, that had a lot of give when locked as well, mystery smears on the carpet, mold lines around the tub was more than enough. We ended up pushing a chair under the door knob to prevent unexpected entry...what a nightmare!
Since then, I have gladly paid more for nice accommodations!

Probably Motel 6 back in the day when they were decent. When I travel I always look for good value but I never compromise my safety or comfort for cheap.

Cheap hotel for me was function as in place to sleep. Luxury accomodations were always the best in quality/comfort etc.

Somehow cheap hotel and enjoying your time there don't go together very well. But our stays at the Ritz Carlton Bacara (Santa Barbara) and the Ritz in Marina Del Rey LA on points were pretty cheap and we had a great time.

Stopped at some place on the way to CA years ago. Didn't look great but it was late. But when we got in the room and discovered cockroaches that was it. Out of there. Went down the road a little further and found a nice clean newer place - nothing fancy but it was ok by me at that point.

Bush whacking, mountain climbing, rock face of Senca Rock.
I stayed in the LODGE at Blackwaterfalls State Park. Hasn't been updated since 1963, Oct 29. I think that when they got electricity.
It was the place I slept but was never at. The Monongaheala National Forest is SPECTACULAR.
ONe of the best vacations ever..in a crappy lodge.

Before I was married, one of my good friends and I would go to the beach often. We found a little motel on the beach with about 6 rooms. It was painted purple. The owners lived on the property and kept the motel clean and well kept. The rooms had two double beds and a small kitchenette. It was very reasonably priced. The owners of the motel were generally out of site. I remember at least once a guy came poking around. Maybe it was someone we met on the beach or someone at a restaurant. The owner chased him off. So, in addition to the motel being clean and well kept, we felt like it was safe.

When I traveled as a student, we stayed in hostels, which were often college dorms. In Rome, it was an old monestary, right by the Coliseum, couldn't get any closer! It had a beutiful courtyard, where the youth gathered at night with guitars and other music. It was great... and cheap!

Fort Lauderdale, FL, Orlando, FL & Naples, FL widely varied in price although "cheapest" is a relative term.

Someplace in a little town in Iowa comes to mind. It was just after I graduated from college and I was there for a wedding. That's all I remember except it must have been cheap!

It was a youth hostel located in an old crusader castle, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. It was really cheap (in today's money probably about $10.00), and the view was amazing.
It was a long time ago when I actually qualified as a "youth". ;-)
