We dont require it in Wisconsin.

All agents are Brokers in Oregon - been in existance since 2001.  The idea behind it was accountability for each agent's actions. New agents are Brokers who have to work under a Principal Broker for a minimum of 3 years before they can start their own brokerage - but have to be a Principal Broker for this.  40 hour class plus another test to become a Principal Broker.

When I got my license in 1976 all Massachusetts had were Broker's licenses. Sometime in the 80's they went to the sales agent license. Later on a sales agent could study and earn a broker's license if they chose

Arizona does not require all agent become brokers. Thank goodness. Also if an agent desires to become a broker they must have been practicing for 3 years first and then take the broker courses and pass the test.

I do not know.  I do know that California changed the requirements to get a broker license many years ago. It was a good change requiring people to be real estate agents for a period of time before getting the broker license. What a concept!

I have always wondered about this. Florida does not require it so I will be reading the responses from other states.

Less risk and liability for brokerages if all agents are brokers. Full brokers don't need to work under the supervision of a broker in charge of an office. It also ensures more hours of study and deeper knowledge than just a basic license.

We didn't have any such requirement in NY, and we don't have that requirement in MT either.

California has licenses for sales agents and brokers. Agents do not need a broker license but they need to associate with a broker to practice.

Higher level of education in the agent. That's for IL. Couple of years now since that has taken place.

Illinois went in that direction some years ago. To be a managing broker you needed additional education. So salesman to broker or broker to mananging broker. Tell me the difference.
