I don't consider your example avoiding a real estate question. There might be questions that I won't answer directly because it's illegal to do so per Equal Housing laws... but even these I still answer by saying I can't provide data and they are welcome to do their own research.

"Those people are religiousĀ freaks!" is 'How about those Buccaneers?"

"Yes or No, do you really think Trump should be president?" becomes

"Yes or No,Ā  are you still off the cocaine?"

And of course the sly smile lets folks no I'm not waking into their trap.

Most people ask me how the real estate market is going. Real Estate is so regional, I always answer with a whole lot of stuff to give them a variety of information. For example, here it could be that it's impossible to get fire insurance for certain types of homes in cetain areas. I just went through this with a client who ended up buying in Pebble Beach.

Some lady asked me at a Open House I was doing if I knew the what the race and nationality make up of the neighborhood was.Ā  I asked her if she just dropped out of the sky, andĀ  since you drove here through Leesburg, you already know that there are people here from all over the world of all races and nationalities so don't ask me stupid questions.
