If it was someone right in front of me at my company I would say something right then & there that it was incorrect. If no one says anything, it might be considered OK to talk that way.

If it does not stop, escalate from there.

Luckily, the only comments I have heard were from clients and one from a vendor.  I do nip it quickly stating that I dont accept that kind of language.  I have lost a client over it who said  "why do you care, you are white"  Ugh. 

Our staff is of different ethnicities and that's how we like it.

In 16+ years I encountered it only once with a client. I advised of the laws that prohibit discrimination and not accepting the highest and best offer from [fill in the blank] of the 9 offers received is unacceptable.  The client accepted the offer.

What makes you assume there is racism in my brokerage? I've not seen it. But if I ever personally heard an expression of racism and was in charge of personnel, that person would be gone in a NY minute. All that being said, people are using the word racism to apply to an awful lot of situations that are not actually racists. The word has begun to lose its meaning.

Racist remarks are the least of my worries in the real estate business. Some days threatening remarks can bombard you from all angles and without a thick skin you likely won't survive it. In the offices I've worked in during the past 25 years I can barely recall anything resembling a racist comment that needed to be handled. In elementary school we learned that sticks and stones may break our bones but names will never hurt you. Today's "civilized" society would do well to be educated by a few 2nd graders!

Same way as any problem or situation - first fully understand what was said and what happened. If indeed an inappropriate event took place, then there would be an education step, apologies or other amends and move on from there. Repeat offender despite the above actions already taken would be cause for termination of relationship.

Racism is only ONE predjudice people need to get over.   People are judging and being judged every day for many things. Whether you realize it or not, YOU are probably doing it too based on how people look, what they wear, how they talk, body art, hairstyle, etc. etc. etc.  We just need to be kind to everyone.
