It means THE Day an operation begins. Perhaps that's where the saying started because now we use it when there is no more time to delay and it's time to take action. It's D Day.

Nothing. Or maybe "Day."
It is widely believed that the "D" in D-Day stands for "designated," or "decision," or something else along those lines. These beliefs, while creative, are unfounded. According to the Department of Defense Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms, D-Day is simply "The unnamed day on which a particular operation commences or is to commence." Similarly, H-Hour is "The specific hour on D-day at which a particular operation commences."
D-Day is commonly used to describe June 6, 1944, the day Allied forces executed a plan called Operation Overlord to invade France during World War II.
You can find more information at the National D-Day Memorial Foundation site.

Wanda, some great answers.
TIME Magazine, a week after the invasion did concur with most of the interpretations that it stood for "DAY" (of invasion)
Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower added an interesting wrinkle in 1964 when a subordinate was directed to answer a question of him of what D-Day stood for on the 20th Anniversary of D-Day. His aid responded that it stood for (Invasion) DEPART Day.
I have read other military experts state that it stands for DISEMBARKATION DAY as soldiers/Marines would disembark from a ship to invade an island or mainland. The US military in the early days before World War II did refer to when the Selective Service Act passed to require able body males to register for the draft as R-Day(Registration) and the mass mobilization of servicemen and women after the attack on Pearl Harbor as M-Day (Mobilization) so an argument can be made for the "D" standing for Disembarkation Day as the French used.
No matter what expert you listen to, for me it stands for:
DEVOTION, DUTY, DAUNTLESSNESS, DEATH.

Doughnuts in the breakroom Not again!
Dy as in Normandy.
Doom as in 'Abandon all hope yea who enter here."
But it may identify the days of the week containing the letter D.
However, one may see a parrellel with the countdown to a lauch such as T-67
