We have numerous scoring events for our members as they set up or enhance their profile page.  In general, you'll earn 25-100 points for every section the first time you update it.

Points May be Deducted from Your Account

Our goal is to make our points a reward system, not to be punitive and deduct points all the time. That being said, there are certain scoring events that can be reversed (you lose the points).  Examples include:

• Deleting a blog post
• Deleting a comment
• Unfollowing a member

We have a rule in the system stating that any points are locked in after six months. So, if you go in and delete an outdated blog post from 2012, you won’t be penalized.

There are also times when we will deduct points from a member's account if we feel they are blatantly abusing the points system.

View Your Points At Any Time

Members can navigate to the "Points" page on their computer or phone to see how they are tracking on points this month and to see the total points accumulated on their account.

The points are organized into smaller "buckets" so you quickly see where your engagement is strongest.

Earn 10% of the Points for Every Person You Invite

One of the fastest ways to accumulate points on ActiveRain is by inviting new members and coaching them on how to engage within the community.

When a member accepts your invitation, we attach them to your account in our database. At the end of each month, our system will award you a bonus equal to 10% of any points your invitees earned.  These points are awarded as a single lump sum.

Yes there are limits. Please think more in terms of delivering quality content than acquiring points. If you do, people will like and comment on your content which will provide you with points. See how that works?

Also, there is no limit to the points for comments you receive on your posts... AND you get 6 points for every comment you reply to on your own blog post.  For example if someone makes a comment that is 6 points and your reply (in a separate comment) will get you another 6 points.  This is incentive to write good content in order to get interaction on your posts.

Roy Kelley gave you the answer.  Write good comments, not drive-by comments that say nothing, and show that you have not read the post.  You will make friends and have followers that way and this is also add points.  A

Want to reach 500K as soon as possible. The big chucks of points come when you post a blog. Actually posting something anyone wants to read makes it more rewarding.

Post a reblog every day.

Comment on 20 blogs each day.

Comment on your own blogs.

Follow 5 additional members each day.

Answer 20 questions each day.

Yes there are limits, you also need to check out the length of posts to get credit in that category.  

I remember the days fondly of wanting your comment to happen. It will!

I provided you a link the other day, which provides all the information to the questions you are now asking. Product reviews in the Rain have not been functional for a long time.

Participation is the best way. Create good posts, in your style of course, stay true to the rules and build relationships. It will happen!

You can post as much as you want BUT there are limits on how many points per day you can receive.

Now with that said, here are some caveats:

1. You cannot control people liking/commenting on/featuring/reblogging your blogs.  So don't count on those.  Those, if they happen, are "icing on the cake".
2. Product reviews: This section hasn't worked in years, so don't expect any points from there.
3. Questions being featured are even rarer than blogs being featured, so don't count on those.
4. Points for an answer being "liked" (aka Upvoted), don't count on those and you are less likely to get them the further you are from when the question was asked.  People read answers, but don't usually come back to read them the day after they post an answer.

Kate, since you want to obtain a free account ASAP and you asked elsewhere in the thread if it could be done in a year and the answer is YES. If you are willing to commit the time, but doing so in a way where you don't robo blog or serial and or "drive by" comment it is possible, but it would consume a minimum of three-four hours per day.

Easiest path to points that you can control:

1.  Log in everday for a year    =         36,500 points

2.  20 sincere, thoughtful, heartfelt comments per day =   182,500 points

3.  Post 10 entries to your blog every week =     117,000 points

4.  Follow five new members every day for a year =  18,250 points

5.  Re-blog one member post per day  for a year =        9,125 points

6.  Post one question to Q/A per day for a year    =        3,650 points

7.  Answer 20 questions in Q/A per day for a year =  109,500 points

     (this can be difficult on some days as there are not 20 questions but there are some motivated Rainers who go back several years to answer that 20th question on a day when the quanity of questions is lacking)

So you can control your own destiny through lots of hard work and time per day on Acitve Rain and earn 476,525 point in one year.

With a little help from your Active Rain friends if you are really sincere, personable, and genuine with your comments and posts it is very realistic for you to conservatively earn these points:

-  Obtain 5 likes from answers to questions each day =    18,250 points

-  Average 1 comment and you reply to the comment for each of your 10 blog posts per week for a year =  6,240 point

This will take you over 500,000 points in a year.

Carol Williams brings up an excellent observation about the opportunity costs this will impose on your business and that is something you will have to weigh the pros and cons.  The subscription is really reasonable so as Carol points out will this be hurting your bottom line by devoting so much time here on AR???  Good luck!

What is your objective as an Active Rain member?  Points to save the annual fee or learning/interacting with other AR members?  If the interaction is not worth the annual fee, the time you spend to get the free membership would be better utilized elsewhere.
