Yes, you can get 500k points in a year.  It takes a LOT of work.  Logging in daily, answering up to 20 questions per day, leaving 20 comments on blogs per day and writing 10 blogs per week.  Plus doing every contest that is offered.

I got my free account in about 9 or 10 months doing that, but I did get somewhat burnt out.  Once you have that 500k in points, your account is free FOREVER.
