I have a monthly giving budget and tend to keep it local and flexible as needs arise.  I also have a few specific charities I donate to a couple times a year, including the local food kitchen for the homeless and the Salvation Army.

I like giving through our church Donald Urschalitz . Our church also supports 3 local ministries that the congregation votes to support. That list of 3 changes every year. Aside from that we support the Red Cross and the Salvation Army because those two organizations came through BIG time during the flood that devastated 1/3 of the homes in Minot ND in 2011.

Yes, I do have a favorite charity, but unfortunately it isn't one that the IRS recognizes, so I don't ever get to claim on taxes, haha.  I don't want to give with the purpose of saving on taxes, but I do think we should get credit for all charitable givings, even if they aren't registered properly.
