Typically in counties impacted by fires lenders put a stop to issuing loans and insurance providers put a stop to issuing policies. That holds up any in progress transactions as anything in process will need to be re-evaluated to make sure it's still standing.

I heard that hotels are booked solid in surrounding areas, resturants are packed and retail in general is at peak trade with so many trades visiting

I've dealt with Bay Area (Oakland,CA) fires when I lived up there and almost annually San Diego, CA fires. They have a varied affect, pending to whom it happened, where and what their loss was.

Skye,
It depends where in CA you are asking about. Here in Santa Barbara County, we lost an entire neighborhood from the subsequent slides after the fire. It is doubtful it will be rebuilt. People are moving out. Some people lost acreage when the water poured out of the broken reservoir. In Northern Cal, the fires last year had a major effect not only on homes but also on the wine industry...A

Obviously, the answers will vary depending on where California agents are located and how close to the actual fires.

When I was first licensed our area was impacted by fires which had both longand short term including as previously mentioned by Ryan insurance issues for many years, even higher rental rates and inventory(duh).

I bet inventory is down. Sorry, couldn't help myself.
It is a terrible situation & hope they will get back to normal soon if that is even possible.

I was voluntary evacuated. Packed photos, work clothing, paintings, cameras and put into a storage unit. Put animals (I have many) at a local stables rented space. Kept working. Slept on sister's sofa.
Bought water, gatoraid and baked goods for fire fighters and left cases with the CAL TRANS/ CHP who kept looky loos out. My nephew is a local fireman and he worked first on the Carr fire then here. (My brother in law also Fire dept)
I'm home, animals back, planning for next disaster, practicing drills for earthquake. Did not miss a day of work.
Meanwhile I have filled in FEMA forms for a number of people, made calls to insurance adjusters on behalf of those who asked, talked with many about making decisions.
I'm a lender; but, offering choices- temporary housing, move, sell the lot, or rebuild.
I'm a contractor so I help get granular about costs without doing the work.
Most Californians want to rebuild. We have to rebuild with better perimeters in hillsides, woodland areas and be ready now for possible mud in the winter or something else.
It is not the city or county or state's job to make 250 feet around our homes clear, it is our jobs to maintain this. Difficult to communicate these goals with those who don't have savings, live in areas that are gentrified and they have been there 50 years.
We're tough. We will be fine.
thanks for asking

I drove through one of the fire zones in Northern California last Tuesday. No fire near the road. The area was already burned over. Eerie! Black, charred sticks that used to be trees pointing toward the sky. Blackened dirt. Ground cover burned away. What used to be a house…now reduced to rubble surrounding a fireplace…the only thing still standing. A couple of burned out metal hulks that used to be cars. Horrible air quality from the smoke that has been omnipresent for days. Very moving!

Here in Florida, insurance companies stop issuing policies when a hurricane is on the horizon. They draw lines around a geographic area where the hurricane may hit, it is called "the box". Our Florida contracts address this potential problem.

I just returned from California.... traveled from Sacramento to the San Diego area.. and the smoke in the North was heavy... so sad really. But in the south the air was clear. Can't imagine fires for 2 years in a row in the Norther parts. Devastating for so many.

Fortunately I'm not from that area and don't have to contend with those issues. My heart goes out to all those affected. The homeowners, businesses, wildlife, pets etc... My admiration goes out to all the public service people and military who are assisting in supressing these firefighters. Especially my heart goes out to all loss of life and their affected families. Prayers for you all.

The impact will undoubtedly vary from area to area. The devastation has no words - the loss cannot be measured although insurance companies will do just that.

Not much this year, but when they do pop up, real estate in the area comes to a half. Lenders won't close in affected areas.

I am not in California but have lots of realtors friends there and it will be a tough time for the next 3 months.

A buddy of mine lost his home. He's a contractor and just spent two years building it. Luckily, tenants moved out of onw of his rentals, so that is where he is living for now. Got lucky.

So sad and tragic. One of my daughters is visiting Portland and even there it's all smoky from the California fires.
