1.) Try to really, truly listen to hear the deeper issue that sometimes tends to be buried a bit below the surface.
2.) Acknowledge that I've 'heard' what they shared and try to sum up what I've heard in my own words.
3.) Listen to their response
4.) Repeat steps 1-3 if necessary
3.) Discuss - Calmly.

This is to broad a topic for me Richie Alan Naggar BUT in general if I'm sure I'm right and I can not persuade them I walk away in pretty short order. Sometimes a prayer is in order and sometimes I need to concentrate on where my 6 shooter is.

I stick to the facts. I keep emotions and how I "feel" about it out of the discussion. I avoid using the word "you" and say the company name. I recap my understanding of the situation. I ask them to tell me if that is their understanding ... or do they understand differently. It goes on and on. When I have completed what I want to say ... I ask them ... how do you propose we move forward with this.

Well, unless if it escalates, it may not make it into the 'argument status', which I'm sure is what everyone would want (even if one side digs in their heels at the beginning) Richie Alan Naggar. If it's emotion based, it's actually harder to try and dispute it rationally, but if it's fact based, you or a mediator has a better chance. It also depends on the severity of the disagreement - if it's 'light', then both parties can work to negotiate a peace, and if it's 'heavy' then that will take more effort and maybe a day to cool off. I think if anyone can 'control' this, you would be an excellent negotiator, because you always have such good thoughts and words to express them, and do think outside the box.

I am better at moderating a disagreement than being involved personally in one. However, I think the best way of handling these situations is to listen and ask questions.

Depends on who is disagreeing...
If it is my hubby or kids, we don't escalate into anything big.
IF if is an agent, then they are wrong and I have no patience for stupidity.
You can't "handle" a disagreement with someone who is emotional or has never read the contract...I do not want to be their therapist or friend.
I switch to e-mail...and what the contract says.
