When I started on Facebook, I still worked in radio on the side. So I had a large collection of people. I have over the years removed probably 80% of the people that I previously had because most of them were not actual friends nor interested in engaging me--and to me that's important. I don't accept people that have thousands of friends even if I like them a lot because I don't really want to be exposed to their crazy followers. If you are on my page and you have a crapload of followers, I've already got you hidden. Nothing personal. There's already too much noise and garbage that goes on in there. I just want to rock and laugh and be boring and love people that I love.

I know a guy with 4999 friends.  Really?  You know 4999 people?  I currently have 422 "friends" and that's too many.  I purge periodically and should be doing so again soon.
