radon levels Radon levels are not identical within in the same day. That's why they test for several days at a time...sometimes more.  I do like the continuous monitor testing over the canister. You can see the changes. Barometric pressure probably causes more variation changes than seasons.

   Winter test may show higher concentrations, because the doors and windows are closed. 

    Summer, the windows may be open, ceiling fans running, so the concentration will be less.

Weather conditions can also impact radon levels... rain & humidity especially.  The two day tests common in real estate therefore have significant limitations -- especially if you're testing on two rainy days!  

 

Can you tell radon is a common "issue" in this market?  :)

It can be different for every testing. In our market, there are very specific areas that are more prone to radon that other. But more than season, who, where, and how it is tested is important. -K

It is probably true, but I don't know to what extent. We don't have much of radon issue in my market and the one time I had an issue in a home it was easily determined why and remediated quickly.

No, it's not the same throughout the year...and if it's raining, that raises the levels, sometimes considerably.

1 out of every 4 houses comes in high in our area. The tests do vary and the higher level readings happen when there is a high pressure weather system over the area

Over-all radon dissipates fairly uniformly through out the year Praful Thakkar HOWEVER the levels in the home are going to change through out the year depending upon climate. As and example we have high levels in many parts of North Dakota. With the home closed up tight as a drum when the outdoor temp is below zero the level in the home is going to be very high if no mitigation is present. The same home during the summer is more likely to have the windows open so radon levels will record low during that time.

It fluctuates but I'm not sure which way - either warmer or cooler. EPA has tons of info on it so google the question.

It's not something we do in my market, but I seem to recall that levels are higher at certain times of the year at certain temperatures. The inspector should be able to educate on that. This is a question for them.

Of course not.  If it was one wouldn't need to leave a radon detector in place.  Test once and you would have the number...

I would imagine it completely possible. Heck around here you test with rain and the levels can be quite a bit different than days without rain.

I think that you should direct your inquiry to a radon test expert...perhaps a company that does such tests, Praful Thakkar. 

Radon is not an issue in our area. I have only had 1 done in 20 years...at the request of a client...and it was negative.

I do not know.  I do not do radon in my market. If we did I would most certainly educate myself and find the best inspectors to do the tests.

It has to fluctuate or there would be no reason to test or have radon detectors. Why, when or how it fluctuates though is beyond me. I just know we have a detector in the basement.

Radon is a gas. Like water is seeks out lowest pressure. If the home basement has lower pressure, radon gas will accumulate. Even the radon emitted by those granite counter tops can find its way to the basement.

So, if the environment has a barometric pressure of 29, radon will be less prevalent. However, you will be in the midst of a tornado or category 4 hurricane.

From watching those continuous monitoring tests, it does go up and down. I have seen some abnormally high where anther unit was brought in and it was minimal. Time to test the testers
