Slow down? Reminds me of putting a genie back in the bottle. Changes need to start at the point of entry-level ...making if far more relevant and challenging to even pass an RE agent or broker exam.
Brokers need to do a better job in grooming agents and teaching basic "skills" like business 101. Some might say it's not the Broker's job. That may be true yet someone needs to do it.
Seems like the breakdown of "relationships" may have come with the entry of email technology, phone technology (texting) social media, and all the other "on-line" places that people escape to and can easily avoid building relationships.
We've been trained to want and expect instant gratification. Take the easy pill and you won't have to do the work. Believing the bull crap that agents get sold every - single - day.
Oh, you got me started.
I've never purchased buyer leads ... or any leads.

Short of educating agents or pulling our listings from portals en-masse, there is no way to slow the trend. I don't waste my time or money trying to pull buyers anymore, unless they are for my listings (we can double dip in CA).
I am also against buying leads.

I'm not frayed at all over buyer leads.
I don't aspire to receive buyer leads, unless they are from corporate America (or other countries) wanting to relocate their businesses here. I hope to get them from valued colleagues or clients who believe I am right for the gig. No other competition.
Most buyer leads, my lucky ducky referral partners get them.
My BFFs get them cheap.
Angry, sullen, abrupt buyer leads? Say it ain't so!
Geez. I would be pissed off too if my name was sold to the highest BIDDERS, MANY OF THEM, who then burn up my phone and email incessantly when all I wanted to do was look at listings.
I just got an email from some biatch wanting to sell me a mailing list of CCIM SoNV members (I'm a member) . . . let me tell you, if it was legal to firebomb the living daylights outta these scrapers . . .
List To Last.

I have never been a fan of spending money on buyer leads. In my opinion spending that money for Farming and building relationships is way more effective... and long lasting.
Those leads are sold multiple times to anyone who will pay for them. If I was getting those calls, I would be annoyed too. No wonder the real estate industry has such a bad reputation of being vultures.

like buzzards circling the prey....they wait until the right moment to land & eat their fill. Getting harassing calls from agents trying to talk you out of the biggest investment of your life is an intrusion. The fact that it works sometimes sends a false message. Majority looks down on this...predator/prey relationship

Of course I am.
The race to the bottom appears inevitable.
What is missing from the discussion is the clear identification of the FRANCHISE that promoted the 'laying seige' and 'endless exploitation' and 'brazen tactics' promoted in annual gatherings that preceded their 'we got ethics' deception.
As long as such enterprises can continue undisclosed the FRAY goes unimpeded.
What is missing in your question and this discussion is the the contemporary definition of RELATIONSHIP.
What marketing evolution has shown is RELATIONSHIP takes too long to establish FIRST, so access is more important. And the resulting 'free-for-all' has the Evil Empire chortling at the dumb-a**e* forking over thousands of dollars so they can be PREMIER.
What those of courage can do is associate those who pay the EVIL EMPIRE for deception to a 'ain't got no ethics' practice.
How to slow it down?
Defy your broker and local association. Do you have the courage?

There will be no slowdown of this trend so long as agents get sold a bill of goods by the ZTR's and think there is a silver bullet to make their business grow.

Great question can it be slowed down??? Only if we do not join in on the fray of it all. Do not buy leads from them just stop do not do it .... Spend your money in other places and leave them behind.

Slow this trend? We are part of the trend and apologize to no one for seeking additional busienss in a professional manner. We won't attempt to manage other's business activities as long as they are legal and ethical.

Website are selling so-called buyer-leads to agents because those buyer-agents are buying hope - the easy button. As long as those lead sellers create hope, the lead buyers want hope. The problem is that agents are terrible marketers, or don't have a marketing plan plan, and generally lack marketing skills and the effort necessary to specific marketing actionables.
1,725,996
We do not concern ourselves with these issues and keep our 'noses to the grindstone' by focusing on our business.
1,844,171
Trend? This is now entrenched & it doesn't help new agents get business. They have to figure that out for themselves.
4,800,082
As long as agents are willing to buy and compete for these types of leads, I see no end to it.
