No... I don't see one having much to do with the other. I wouldn't join at all. I considered this requirement to be an NAR member a form of enforced unionization. The only way I'd join and/or pay more if membership was voluntary is if I was convinced the public really understood and appreciated the connection. To the public we are all Realtors, whether we are or are not. And all this "baloney" about our living with a higher code of ethics... is also baloney... you can't teach ethics. I've met Realtors who are unethical and non-Realtors who are the ultimate in ethical. If you're not inclined to be ethical you won't be.

NAR would have to do some serious convincing that they are worth the membership.  Plus, they would need to have buy-in from a "critical mass" of the public.  Currently the term "real estate agent", "real estate salesperson" and "realtor" interchangable and "realtor" has been demoted to common vernacular and has ZERO recognition in the public as a trade organization.

The forced code of ethics invalidates the code because you agree to it under duress (don't agree and don't get access to the MLS).  That is their biggest selling point, but it is all too easy to break the code and the punishment for breaking it is (in most cases) a strongly worded letter.  Some associations even make the complaint process so arduous that filing one is all but discouraged!

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

It would have to be a totally revamped organization, Bob. Right now, anyone can be one and there is NO exclusivity whatsoever. You're onto something with the higher standards and EARNING the right to join.

We all have a sour taste in our mouths about NAR right now and I feel like lack of enforcement and the ability to report CoE violations is one of those hot topics for those who care about this being a PROFESSIONAL organization.

That's not even considering the logo debacle, the money overspent on lobbying and the fact that they sold us down the river when they sold Realtor.com!

Value of NAR:

COE
Tools/forms.

COE can be rolled and smoked. People get away with violating it every single day. 99% of the time it's more trouble than it's worth to enforce.
Basically worthless.

This leaves the forms. Necessary evil.

So what would be your definition of earning the right to join?

No No No ..... I don't think it's worth it now except for the contracts they help construct with the help of local attorneys that volunteer.

I do not think that ANY organizations we can belong too now are exclusive - using that word is a joke like a golf club. Paying to join doesn't make the membership worthwhile.
That's the problem.

I wouldn't, I'd save that money. I don't see the value in the Realtor name. Most of the public doesn't realize that there's a difference between a Real Estate Agent & a Realtor & if they knew the difference I doubt they'd make a decision based on that. I also don't see any benefits to belonging to this association. I would much rather not be a member.

No, I probably would not join unless they could show some tangible return. NAR has lived too long by promoting the use of Realtor® as the major benefit. The only person that thinks Realtor® is important is Phil Dunphy.

I am willing to pay more for anything that I perceive has value.  Being forced to pay for anything does not bode well for me. Memberships for the most part only mean something to the members.  The public does not understand our associations or the real estate business, in general.

In theory this is an excellent idea and proposition.

In reality, associations begin to find reasons to “need” more things to give the “members” more “value”. At that point they begin to outspend their revenue. To prevent raising dues they open to more members and when they see the influx of money the association starts taking on more and more members to make more money. It’s a vicious circle as old as time and I do not see any way to fix it without enforcing repercussions for the injustices already happening everyday

As involved as I am in leadership at both the local and state level, I don't see much value in my NAR membership. Of course the state meetings try to get you pumped up for being a REALTOR®, but really the consumer doesn't know the difference. Even after all the money NAR has spent to try to increase this awareness.

I completely agree with what Nina Hollander has to say.

I wish I had to right NOT to join when I was "forced" to be a member for MLS access. Considering NAR's actions and inaction, I do not view membership in NAR a value, more so a detriment to the profession...

Complaint is about the value of NAR!

(The state & local associations did bring benefit and value to the table. IMO)

"Undeserving members like it is now."

Sounds like the start of a rant.

So, lets play.

List those organizations with the high standards and meaningful 'discrimination' for which your are a champion. What are the 'higer standards' to which you refer?

When choice is removed resentment grows. And that is more descriptive of 'like it is now." and likely a motivation behind your question. YOU want to leave, but you can't.
