American Flags flying after dark must be illuminated.

They should be taken down during rain.

  You are doing it right!

I do not have a light on my pole flag. I do not have a pole flag. What Fred Griffin says makes perfect sense.  I wonder about the protocol for the smaller flags that get stuck into the ground or on patios.

You are correct in your practices. I believe there are some other rules that are easily found on the web.

us history flag code

§6. Time and occasions for display
  1. It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
  2. The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.
  3. The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.

There are rule, pages and pages of rules that dictate how a flag is to me mounted on a fire truck or and the exact orientation a the flag exhibited as a banner.

Very much like the Terms of Service, Security Policy and Terms of Use, an endless waterfall of words, associated with everything we use. Who has time to read all that.

If someone owns a flag and wants to fly it. leave them alone, unless they ask. Then you should say. "Looks good to me" and leave them alone.

As others have stated the RULES state an illuminated flag can remain on display 24/7, but should be regulated (half mast) in height by the directives of the Bureaus of Flag Height and Illumination.

As a former Sgt. of the Guard, the the Marines...The flag MUST be illuminated if left out at night, otherwise it MUST be brought inside. As for the rain issue, the flag Does Not need to be brought inside, if the flag is made of material that can withstand the rain. Most flags today can handle the rain. Finally, thank you for your patriotism and as we say in the Marines.....Semper Fi !

We just have lights on the front of the garage over the flag. I only fly it during the day though as I don't feel the light that we have is respectful enough for the flag. I agree with the way you handle and respect the flag.

I am surprised at how many people are not versed in flag protocol.
