Yes, it was when the Church changed its cadendar, but not all did and celebrated Easter later. They became the April fools... or something like that.

I know it's been around since the start of the 18th century, but there are differing hypotheses as to how it started.

April Fools' Day: Origin and History

No... I only know I seem to come across Fools nearly every day. 

I think it was started by a Scandinavian looking into a mirror and his name was purported to be:  

                                                 LOOF  LIRPA

The real question? How can we make sure it does not clash with Easter... that just seemed odd and I don't recall it happening in the past.

Because Pope Gregory decided to change the calendar from starting on April 1 to January 1.  Hence the name "Gregoran Calendar".
