Many Realtors are going to be OLD MAP BOOKs if they do not adapt to the GPS our industry has become.

Totally remember those books! When I moved to Phoenix in 93 (from small town of Flagstaff) I used the big map book to map out every house I showed. I had no idea of where I was going and I sure wanted to get there!

When I first started in the business I had the map books. I remember putting stickies on the streets of the houses I was showing & then doing a connect-the-dots to plan my route.
Even though we have GPS now & life's a lot simpler I still think it's a good idea for this generation to learn to read maps.

The "Thomas Guide" was a required purchase each year. We'd hit up Costco every January and they'd have pallets of them. We'd buy one for the (home) office, then move that one to the primary car, then that one to the secondary car and the secondary car's old one would be tossed.
We used to have the Thomas Guide map page listed in all our listings and the office is where we planned our driving routes, so that's why the newest one went to the office.

How about AAA trip planning book routes their office provided members. The agents preplanned your whole route so you wouldn't get lost:-)
My parents were not AAA members. They used to get in the biggest arguments over map reading. Dad would never stop for direction help.....

We still have US maps in our traveling vehicle. We used to highlight all the places we went as we traveled cross country, but we have stopped doing that. The maps are still in the car though and the kids look at them sometimes on our road trips. -K

Oh,yes! I keep an atlas in my car because I don't always take the GPS recommended route. Last year, for example, on my way thru California to Arizona, I went a much more indirect route to avoid fires and traffic issues.

I was just discussing how Google Maps has simplified driving this week. It is nice that you can program in the address and have the directions read to you. No more pulling over when you are alone. Of course Google Maps and a passenger/navigator is even better. :-)

Actually, I don't, Richie. I was selling in NYC at that time... no maps needed.... city is east and west and north and south on a grid. Besides I grew up in NYC and could get anywhere by foot, subway, bus without consulting any maps. By the time I was selling in Charlotte, there was mapquest, etc. to consult.

Oh, I do! I remember my trifold, laminated Charlotte map - loved it!
Funny but, because I used a map so much before GPS ever came about, I utilize the map on my dashboard GPS far more than the directions!
Knowing the city from memorizing that laminated map years ago has been a tremendous benefit in this business!
