Yeah, my web guy spanked me for uploading too big files . . . and our MLS won't let us upload anything smaller than HD . . . it's a tightrope walk to please all these nitpickers!

Kathleen Daniels I use a program called FastStone Photo Resizer. You can compress files one at a time or in batches. For example, a whole directory. The files are renamed to protect the size of the original files. The program is free, but there is a charge for commercial use.

Yes, that is the easiest thing you can do to speed up your website. Load speed is an important ranking factor with google. Kathleen Daniels , this is one of my favorite photo file compression tools. https://compressor.io/
People should get familiar with either Photoshop, gimp, or PicMonkey as well. Also, these following tools can come in handy https://imageoptim.com/mac, https://pngmini.com/, If wordpress users have updated to WordPress 4.4, the core software code manages responsive images. The correct size image gets delivered to every device. https://make.wordpress.org/core/2015/11/10/responsive-images-in-wordpress-4-4/

I have a plugin that compresses them during upload. I was using WPSmush, but they wanted $$$$ for the better compression levels and bulk compression options (plus it had issues working with GoDaddy servers). I've since moved to EWWW Image Optimizer. 100% Free and works very well. Been very happy with it.

I use Photoscape on everything and reduce the size to 1000 X 750 or less Kathleen Daniels . I do this so things load faster when someone reads my posts. I have jumped out of other peoples posts if I have to wait for a photo to load.

We are in the process of having a new site developed and the guy just talked to me yesterday about this issue and gave me some solutions on how to solve the 1000+ images we currently have on the site. Eye opening for sure.

My photographer provides me with a smaller size photo made for our MLS and use on my website. So the answer is yes, they are sized appropriately for online use. Print materials and postcards get the high resolution photos.

It is a good idea as the graphics here on AR load so slowly especially when they use that new header. It makes me totally scream!
Besides, the MLS is compressed for your IDX so why not other pictures. Think about the load times if it wasn't - yikes.

I try not to upload files that are too terribly large. My photographer gives me two sets - one for online use and the other for print (the latter are the larger files).
However, even uploading the online files on my website, I have a plug-in that further squeezes them.
Last month my site caused 3 others in a tech mastermind group I'm in, who are also on the same server, to crash! We were down nearly an entire day and my web guy (who owns the server) told me my plug-in had not been working and I had too many humongous files in my media. I felt terrible that my site had caused the outage for the others!

Yes, I do. If you have a lot of pictures on your website that are not compress it will take too long to upload, and that will make your site very slow, and it will hurt the ranking. The loading time is critical. If someone is trying to visit your website and it takes too long to load they will leave the site even before it load.

Yep, I use FastStone Photo Resizer for all of my photos I upload. It's a free programs and works fast. A high quality image taken directly off a high end camera at 5 megabytes will look the exact same on a computer screen or phone when resized to 200 kilobytes.

Makes sense. Windows 10 built-in apps can do that for you is a second or so. Take Paint for example. Great app to make image files smaller.

The theme we use automatically compresses and scales the uploaded graphics but does not reduce the quality. We use lossless also, so the site will load faster and only pull in the graphics as the searcher scrolls.
