I post to my website first. Then AFTER the post has been indexed by GOOGLE on my website - I then post it on AR and as many other sites as I can.

We then share it through social media.

We make sure we are linking to the content ( backlinks).

We do a lot of vertical SEO.

There is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty, you can read my explanations about this in the comments to other members here.

I do it exactly as Anita Clark does it - the website first, make sure it has been 'found' by the search engines and then here.

Unlike the common myth, if you're going to be penalized, it's not going to be on your own website (if you post it there first). So, you have no need to worry about it being considered duplicate content.

Personally, I would post to your site first, change up the article slightly (about 25% including the first paragraph) and repost to AR, and be sure to include a link in your AR article pointing back to your original article on your own site (with keywords you want the original to rank for).

Duplicate content will kill you on SEO and Google won't recognize it. In my world, it is never a good idea to duplicate content. I write an original blog on my website because that's where I want to capture my clients.

To boost my website, I write an introduction of sorts to my blog on Active Rain. It's sort of like a commercial but it has meat in it, it's not worthless fluff. But is certainly not the same content. Plus, when AR links to my blog, it also sends out a blog to my outside blog which is duplicate content from Active Rain but NOT from my website. The point is to make everything point to your own website. To a blog you control and directly reap the benefits from.

Plus, I will say this, sometimes my content is found on Active Rain first. But the reader always ends up on my website, LOL.

As an alternative to posting duplicate content, you could post an introductory summary of the article on AR and link to the full article on YOUR website.  This kills two birds with one stone by ecouraging the reader to visit your primary site.

The duplicate content concept is misunderstood by many.  I post on my WP site. I use a plugin that auto-posts to my FB business page, LinkedIn and Twitter. If I have the time I will share on G+ and AR once the post or page is indexed.  When I do share on AR I aways leave a line at the bottom showing the original post with the backlink.

I agree with posting to your own site first then AR.  I like to write 600 words or so for my site.  Cutting this down to less for AR would alleviate some duplicate content problems.  Using different photos with changed descriptions/titles helps.

Just write something different on here and link back to your original content.  That will actually strengthen the SEO on your site (while interacting here).
