I still have a personal aol email account, because I've had it since forever and people know to find me there. 

I haven't used anything else aol-related, and never go to the aol website.

Now you are an ancient dinosaur if you even use their email. There are 2 agents in my office that do. I've told them what it means to the public & they keep using it. 

You know, it's like picking up 2 paper cups & some string & expecting to talk to someone!

I haven't used AOL for 25 years or so, ever since I discovered that AOL and the internet are not the one and the same. Yes, I assumed for the first year I was a member that the internet was AOL....lol Technically challenged from early on. Funny thing is now Facebook is practically a modern version of AOL.

When verizon shut down their email service, many migrates to AOL, somaybe email is working better for them than messenger, and/or other messenger services are more popular these days.

I cringe when I see an aol email address since it won't work with most mail platforms these days, and it catches any kind of email as spam. Also, my tech people say its very unreliable in sending email also, since its an older platform. Dunno about that.

I used to use it through Pidgim.  I enjoyed it.  Simple chat service.  Too many companies blocked outside chat programs and put their own internal ones up.  Plus, with texting being free and programs like WhatsApp that really killed the need for chat apps with your friends.  I woulnd't be shocked if the others go away too.
