Not the first state to do that and I am in total agreement with it. The broker has the greatest responsility legally speaking and should be prominate in any and all advertising.
It's long been the size and frequency rule in Georgia... but team names are still very misleading making the public think they are a brokerage and I agree they should not.

They have always been strict with this in IL. People just do what they want until they get caught. Most of the time you can't even see the brokers name/company franchise.

Still in the proposal stage; finalization date for 61J2 is scheduled for discussion and perhaps final approval at the December 13 FREC Meeting.
This is way past due. So many Teams don't even mention the name of their Broker. That is illegal, false, misleading.
I agree with the prohibited words:

If your team is large enough (by the numbers or in your own mind) and you want ONLY your name to be known, then for goodness sakes, break away from the mothership!
These rules are put in place strictly to protect the public and I don't have a problem at all with it.

The team concept is becoming more and more popular as a business model, but the liability is still with the brokerage. I believe a lot of teams should be their own brokerage - they act that way and should have the autonomy that goes with that promotion.

Our real estate commission (TN) addressed this too. Straight from the commissioners mouths was that agents were portraying themselves as stand-alone companies and misleading the public. Thus the new law went into effect. They said that want an accurate representation that a licensed brokerage company is involved.

To have a team name on MLS you have to pay MLS fees for all the Individuals on the team plus the Team. We're allowed to use a team name in advertising but we also have to show the brokerages name. It's just branding yourselves & some companies encourage it.

"Aimed straight across the bow?" That's a pretty militant metaphor. There isn't a war or anything nefarious going on.
There weren't any guidelines or laws, statewide or nationwide, regarding size of team name compared to size of brokerage name. You can't break a non-existent rule.
The new rule will cause a one-time spike in prosperity for signmakers. When all signs are changed over, the main beneficiary will be the "mothership of real estate teams" i.e. the big company that has a culture of teams, the company that ostensibly is the target of this effort to make the brand/brokerage name larger.
The end-consumers who are supposedly being misled into thinking each team is different a brokerage, will now know that all these hundreds of signs city-wide are actually part of one big cohesive successful brand.
This is a brilliant marketing move for the "mothership" brand, courtesy of its competitors who have been fretting over the signs. The competitors have leveraged the government to force an increase of brand awareness and market share of the company they are trying to weaken.

... public perception is key here... if they are being misled by certain teams it drags down the entire industry... we are put in a position of great trust.. that is a huge asset of the industry that needs to be protected. By and large, laws that can enhance public trust should be embraced in my opinion.

IMHO, the age of buyers and sellers selecting an agent based on the big company they are with are OVER!
While I agree that to you and me some team names walk a fine line too close to a brokers name, at the end of the day the customer barely notices team names or even broker names.
Consumers just do not give a crap about a name. So my feeling is this ... if the name is not hurting the customer, then who cares!!!

It would seem so ... CA made some modifications as well. I believe the reason may be because of the mis-use and the deceptive ways team names have been and continue to be created .... as Tammy Lankford, mentions ... to appear as a broker/age.

If you want to look like, sound like, and virtually represent yourself (team, group, company) as a brokerage (a business in Florida that conducts real estate services must hold a license along with a managing broker who is a licensed broker), then the team leader needs to get a broker's license and be their own company. For example: At least two local agents use this formula Real Estate Group. The problem with FREC is not using group, rather it's the use of "real estate" which makes it sound as a company that provides real estate services. In Florida, a sales associate can only perform real estate services under a licensed broker. Therefore it is misleading. This trend is growing and I belive that is why the real estate commission is finally addressing this issue.

I thought this was already a rule in my area, although I'm feeling too lazy right now to go check.
Since all agents report to a broker, I do think the broker name needs to be easier to see on any advertising. It's the same with working at any company. If someone asked an IBM'er where they worked, and they said, "Oh, the Schroeter" team, no one would equate that name with IBM.
