I was in China and sat in on a deal to both buy and sell a property.  There are a few striking differences.  

Being a real estate agent in China is considered a low profession among many of the population.  The agents we encountered seemed just out of high school and were only tasked with opening the properties. Transactions are heavily centric on price and lack the finer points we commonly negotiate.

Another difference is how listings are handled.  While in Beijing, each brokerage must have a contract with the owner to display the listing.  There is not an overall multiple listing service where all agents can show another agents listing.

One of the final differences are negotiations. While at the office both Buyer and Seller commonly sit across from eachother negotiating the sale.  Once terms are agreed to it is recorded by the Agent and a substantial deposit is collected.

No, but I have worked with buyers and sellers who are not American and a language barrier existed.  I get a paid translator. 

My partner has, in Costa Rica, so while Spanish would be handy, it wasn't necessary.

I have never worked real estate outside the USA ... however I helped a military man who was in Afghanistan buy a house in Kenosha, WI ... He never saw the house other than lots of pictures and communications back and forth.  All ended well!

No, and it is completely different.  For the most part, there are no such things as exclusive listings.  In England (the hottest luxury real estate market) according to all the reports we read, the commission is 1%.
