Https is for sites where you have to enter personal information. Since this is a membership site, the inner parts are already protected, however, according to godaddy and SEOmoz, membership sites should have SLL applied to their members areas to further protect the member information. We don't store our medical records here behind the scenes so I personally don't see the big issue. However, the propoganda has been very good about the importance of SSL and GOogle's threats to point it out to visitors may mean AR will have to oblige.
For the public viewing our posts, they are only reading information. They are not entering peronal information so I don't think your posts will be hurt in the rankings. However, people who are searching on the internet may have an issue going to AR to read posts without the little green signal.
Sites like CNN and FoxNews are not SSLd ( yet). They certainly are not being hurt in the SERPS.
I am sure that Jonathan is looking into this and finding out the best thing for AR and its members.

As I understand https is for security issues, For instance, if one tries to log in that is where the http S comes in. I don't believe that reading posts needs that. We have in on the log in portion of our website. Our bank has it on log in only. A

I'm not sure it is necessary - people don't sign in to do anything other than read public posts. For members only posts, we all know it's a 'safe site' so, they likely won't worry about it.

I have not heard about any updates from Chrome on warnings. Is it going to be required of all sites Greg Cremia ?

I seriously doubt that is a priority for AR. I would prefer to take that risk and the management invest in making the platform more stable and stop the frequent glitches that are haunting the system.

I would worry more about AR fixing the ability to publish pictures but thanks to Bob Crane I have been able to find a way around it.

Seems like overkill on Chrome's part, and well stated by Katerina Gasset and others.

Given the problems many sites have had with the conversions (it is far from a simple process even on Wordpress), my guess would be never. Quite frankly I wish Google would get off their high horse and stop smoking whatever it is they're smoking. SSL is not needed the the VAST MAJORITY of sites, including this one! Hell, if you practice good password hygene, even this site's login doesn't need encryption because if they get compromised the password should only be good on this site.

Above my pay grade Greg but I'm sure they will have to deal with it sooner or later. Some sites are already getting flagged that I use.
