I don't stalk clients. I sometimes check out what is going on with them on Facebook.

I wouldn't use the word "stalk". I do check people out as best I can. You can learn a lot by what people post on social media. It has changed my perception of people and whether I want to spend time or work with them.
I try to keep in mind anything I post on the internet is pretty much out there for anyone to see. It doesn't creep me out. It is what it is.

I use social media for ice breakers on calls or personal note subjects; I'm connected to many of them on Facebook. I'd be a bad stalker, no time for that.

Yes. But only freebies, no paid-for background checks.
I want to know who I am dealing with!
Some sites that I search: Social media. Clerk of Courts. Property Appraiser. Secretary of State (corporations, LLCs). Name/age/previous address sites.

No. The thought of doing that creeps me out. I know others have "stalked" me and I feel creeped out by that as well. I now it happens. I have no reason to stalk others. If I did ... that would be a good indicator to me that the relationship, whatever form, is not one I need to have.

It is to know who you are dealing with. I had a walk-in client who gave me a business card but the company didn't exist. Checked his name on google and I was shocked with what I found out about the client.

I will Google the phone number and the name to see if they match. Also as a matter of routine we check company information with the governing board for corporations in their state to see if their company is in good standing. Also, I will check the county records for property in their name.

Be careful Nathan, there have been some court cases about denying employment based upon social media activity. They didn't go well for the employer, if memory serves. Plus, I'm sure now that HUD has made rules about criminal behaviour, they'll make some about using social media.
I don't check social media. I'm more concerned with credit and criminal histories. I think I may add that in again though.

I believe that (it being amazing what you could discover!), and I understand why you do more to get a truer picture of a potential renter Nathan Gesner. Totally agree that you will see that person from a different perspective when checking out FB and Google Search. For our clients, who are not renters but buyers, we do not check in that manner. I'm thinking you are seeing fewer problems with a more detailed search. I know that some, are very happy to say anything and everything!

I don't. Most of my business is repeat and referral, so I know whom I am dealing with. But some of my sellers "stalk" their buyers once we get an offer and contract and report back to me.

If they follow my advise, all citizens will violate the TOU of all such services and participate under an alias, dba or brand.
Using edge and tor make the 'validation' matrix of social media much more difficult for those 'stalking' others online.

My leads come in through Follow-Up Boss from my websites - if their email they've registered with is associated with their social media, the link is there for me and yes, I always look before phoning them back.
It helps to get a quick glimpse of who they are!

Nope. Checking Facebook may be a good practice for property managers.
Many past clients from years past are still Facebook friends.

There are times I do look up a person, especially if they found me online. This is for safety, not for stalking.

I absolutely check out those whom I deal with and I expect they do the same of me. That's just the world we live in. To not do it, is not doing my due diligence. What people tell you about themselves and the actual trail they have left, in some cases, can make your hair stand on end.

Nathan Gesner - not to that 'stalking' extent - but I do keep in mind what is going on in their lives.

No, we stick to the court records, too many fair housing issues revealed on fb.

I do check them out so I know what I am dealing with. My clients stalk sellers and buyers to find out the real story.

Natha,
We do not stalk ever. We may verify, and fortunately we have not worked with those whose intentions are nefarious. A
