The guy at the appliance store told me that it was ok to lay them down as long as you let them set for 12 hours after turning them right side up before plugging them in.  The damage is caused by the oil in the motor being shifted to the side of the motor and needing to settle back to the bottom.

I too recommend doing it the right way and renting a truck if you have too. I have heard the refrigerator will be okay if you don't plug it in or turn it on right away and allow the fluid to reseat.

I'd rent a truck, I'm a veteran of the wrong way...it's less expensive the right way.

Time to rent a truck for the day - far less expensive than replacing the appliances!

I think I have to go with Debbie Reynolds' answer. I've personally never moved either of those appliances.... always sold my houses with them, so never had to move them.

What Debbie Reynolds said about the fridge but, you need to stuff the washing machine 'tightly' or get a 'lock' at the hardware store to protect it. You can ruin them by moving without properly protecting them.

For the washer, possibly towels to keep the drum straighter/tight while it's on it's side. I don't think there is anything you can do with a refrig.

You know, Home Depot only charges $18 for 70 mins which is really affordable for a truck.

This is way above my pay grade ... praying won't hurt.

You have many great comments here. If the value of the appliances are worth more than a truck rental ... then perhaps that is the way to go.

I wish you all the best!

Well,

If you choose to ignore the 'proper way' then I would rely on the DIY examples of those images from the inspector.

Duct tape, cable ties, bungee cords and a homer bucket should be in the solution somehow.
