We have a situation in Central Oregon in which the major water source which supplies farmers downriver (the Deschutes River) is under litigation due to the endangered spotted frog. At the present time, the decision was made that the farmers in an entire county are limited to 75% of their normal allotment. This county is the number one supplier of carrot seed for the nation, and farming is the major supplier of jobs. I wrote a blog about this over a year ago before the current legal settlement was reached, but not finalized. Spotted Frog vs Water Rights .

Water laws and water rights are very important issues in areas such as mine where there is a lot of agriculture and waterfront property.  We also have lots of high elevation canyons where people build homes and don't have a year-round supply of potable water from their wells.   Water access... rights, laws, supply is only a problem when you don't them.  Best know what they are before buying a property.

Water laws and water rights are state specific.  Idaho has very specific and complex laws & water rights - I would recommend you go to your state water board or whoever is in charge of it and read up as much as you can.  Good luck! -Kasey

Water Laws.

Yep, I know them. The most important one is never buy a house that is below grade. The law of water is, "It WILL always find a way in."
