I have an iMac, and a MacBook Pro and have found the iMovie to be a great editor.  As far as transferring I take movies with my iPhone and use airdrop to transfer to either my iMac or my Macbook... it takes less than 3 seconds to transfer a 2 minute video. I store them in Dropbox to make them accessible from any computer or device.

I use Amazon Web Services to store my backups. I've never used it for editing videos, but you might want to check it out as it's very inexpensive...

For video editing, a fast CPU, lots of RAM, and a solid state drive (SSD) is needed for best performance.

For file storage, a large external hard drive, 1TB or more, is cheapest cost per GB, but is susceptible to shock, vibration and crashes.

Costs for USB flash drives are decreasing and storage capacities are increasing, 128 GB and 256 GB are available. I no longer use hard drives.

Current technology USB 3.1 Gen 1 has a maximum transfer speed of 5 Gb/s.
New technology, USB 3.1 Gen 2 has a maximum transfer speed of 10 Gb/s.

Does it have to be a USB/Firewire type drive?  If not, try a network drive.  Just make sure you're running gigabit or faster on the network for best speed.  Ask your tech guy about a RAID drive for redundancy too since all drives are mechanical devices and, like cars and toasters, will eventually fail.

Regularly backup your external hard drive to other external hard drives.  Video editing is very hard drive intensive.

I'm PC since 1995 but what I share is useable on Mac too:

Since about 2007, I use Western Digital MY Books with 2 Terra-bytes memory currently.

I also use the My Passport Ultra 1 Terra-byte "mini" as a mobile flash-drive for between the office & home office; they fit in your back pocket or purse and hold far more than a flash-drive with 500MB

I use MovieMaker that comes with any Windows PC so I assume Mac has a built in too, iMovie I think?

I think most external drives will work for you, the secret to speed is the connection between the computer and the drive.  Go for the fastest possible that's available for your computer.

For storing and EDITING. That last part is important.

Of course, success is paved with money. That means, the 'puter you own may or may not be up to the task.

I use a physical product called MyDrive, priced according the the Terra-bytes needed. Only finished and commercially enabled products are placed in the cloud.
