Dependency on being a member of NAR for residential real estate. Many boards require it and some will not pay beyond 1% to non-NAR members.
I knew a realtor many years back (back in my Mike Ferry days) in Laguna Niguel area that had his own "MLS". He wasn't a part of any board and had enough listings and a way for people to find them that he didn't need the MLS. He still paid a buyer's side commission too, if memory serve.
I don't know if we're so much dependent on the MLS to sell a house, but more it is a central source of listings to go to instead of the olden days of calling offices to see what was new since "the book" was published. ZTR are all public versions of the same MLS mousetrap.
I am trying to break out of that mousetrap based on my own unique interpretations of what I've learned here.

Dependency is a good thing and the reason we live on. Without it there is no glue that holds our lives together. That is why many husbands and wives pass away once the other is passed away. Same thing that seems to have havppened with Debbie Reynolds. Our dependence on the MLS, Sellers, Buyers and fellow Realtor, Lenders, Home Inspectors, Escrow Officers, roads, etc. are all a good things.

This issue or characterization is not specific to real estate. It is a human condition issue. Many people cannot think for their self ... period.

It's that time of year "to NAR, or not to NAR". Do I pay the extortion fees/tax to NAR, or do I go MLS-only?
The challenge is, I want to belong to Florida Association of Realtors, and to Tallahassee Board, and possibly other Associations in Florida, but you have to belong to NAR in order to join those Boards and Associations.
It's not so much dependency upon NAR, it is indentured servitude, bondage, a closed-shop Union.

We see dependency in all aspects of life. I'm pretty dependent on spellcheck. I like it and need it. If an agent chooses to use the MLS as their only way to market, that is too bad for them. For me it is one of many tools.
But to fully answer your question...I see agents dependent upon office assistants to get their listings in the MLS. They can't even do this themselves. I prefer to do it. That way I'm in control of what goes in that listing information.

Agents dependent on their brokerage's website.
For that matter, agents dependent on their brokerage's name.

Depending or dependency involves going outside of the self referred to as outsourcing or delegating. By contrast, hands on or in house takes us to the other end of the scale for the do it yourself or personal servicing. In any event, what comes our way must be handled. Results is the end game
