A lintel is a structural horizontal block that spans the space or opening between two vertical supports. It can be a load-bearing building component, a decorative architectural element, or a combined ornamented structural item. It is often found over portals, doors, windows, and fireplaces.

Ha! Just had a property inspection, it's the top of the window that supports the weight of the building material over the "opening" or of  the firebox of your fireplace too I believe, but definitely windows.

I'm sticking with Wikipedia:  lintel is a structural horizontal block that spans the space or opening between two vertical supports.[1] It can be a load-bearing building component, a decorative architectural element, or a combined ornamented structural item. It is often found over portalsdoorswindows, and fireplaces.
