We are on a well.  We are on the same underground system (the Floridan aquifer) that several bottled water companies draw from.  Deer Park Bottled Water has a huge facility about 60 miles east of here (Madison Blue Springs), they have another facility at White Spring which is 50 miles west of here in Liberty County.  They put the water straight into bottles, it is that pure.   The same water flows out of the faucets in my house.

It varies from community to community and even within the same counties. In my area, some people are on public water, some are on private wells.

No state water system here.  I have a private well.  My county recently added water lines for county water in my area, but I'm keeping the well.  And my entire county doesn't have the lines, just some areas.

That's a complex question, given the size of California. There are two basic types - community water and private wells, but no doubt there are some other systems I am not aware of. We have a fair amount of recycled water for irrigation, and now in Carlsbad there is a desalination plant turning ocean water into drinking water for San Diego County residents

I live one mile from Lake Erie and have a nursery stream running through my property.  (Nursery stream means no fishing as this is one of two streams that empty into Lake Erie that are used for stocking with various kinds of trout.). Other streams & rivers in western PA eventually dump into Ohio River.
