Hard for me to say, as I'm very visual and I really need to see the space to see what layout I would prefer.

I like 2 or 5.  As a cook, I want to be able to prep or cook on my own island and have my guests on theirs.  Barbara Todaro speaks of a magical island in her design choice.

#2 matches our home. Hubby and I are both amatuer chefs. Works perfect while family/friends sit on the barstools and stuff their faces. The smaller island makes a perfect prep station.

1 is too "standard" home.  3 and 6 don't make sense to me visually.  4 I really don't like the rhombus.

2 & 5 are my favorites, seems like they would be the most functional.  I'm leaning toward #2 as the best, simply because the "C" shape allows for cabinets underneath that won't have dead space (like in the corner of the L) and I think you can pick up an extra usable seating space in that middle section where the 90 degree corner would have been.

I also like the look of #6 and the responses of the others for how to use it. For me, I like the rounded corner facing into the great room. It feel less closed off.

I like #6, just a big island that's multipurpose; kitchen side loaded with a sink, storage, maybe wine fridge, outside is seating for 6-8 friends. Doubles as a bar and casual dining counter.

It probably depends upon the user(s) of the kitchen.  Some people may have preferred layouts that work for them based on their past experience.

Depends upon the room(s) near the kitchen and how it may interact.  Up for the most counter space and storage.  #3 looks great, but can see how some home layouts may not work with it.  I have seen #5 in some higher end homes and that enables the homeowner to entertain and let guests visit, while being at outer edge of kitchen, gnoshing on appetizers, while they speak to homeowner who is in interior, preparing food or serving.

I like #3  I'm not fan of odd shapes in the kitchen open to the great room.  It tends to not allow any funky art which I love.

I like to see at least one really large countertop area.  Wouldn't use marble - it is really problematic in a kitchen where anyone actually cooks.  It's beautiful until it starts to crack and stain.

My parents house was #4, didn't like it. I know that you are trying to round off the edges but it didn't work OR it should have been larger for their house.

#3 is interesting but I'd have to see it in real life. Haven't so far.

I like 2 for functionality but 6 (with rounded corners) for an open feeling and the best traffic pattern. Our friends have #6 with the kitchen opening to a great room so sounds very similar to what you described. The concept of 1, 3 and 5 is good but the shapes do not appeal to me, too square looking. 2 or 6 look softer, especially with rounded corners.

I'm voting 6, but I'm just particular enough about my kitchen, that a lot would depend on where the frig and all of the cooktops and sinks are going to be located.

Also given the alternate designs, a lot would depend on the size of the proposed space.  If #6 gives you an island that rivals, say, Kawaii, then it might not be appropriate and look oversized for the space.

I guess I'm saying, Mike, I need more info and pictures pal!

Nice choices for an island Mike Rock - thank you for many options.  My choice is for #3, with a large Prep Island, with a slight modification.  The Sitting/Eating Island I would love rounded or oval, as it would be a nice way to still sit and visit and eat, while someone is doing prep.  Is that a possibility?

island #6 would probably be my choice and the cabinetry under the island counter would be used for storage of large items.... it would have three door and one stack of roll out drawers....behind the third door would be a couple of shelves for large pans....

the island should fit 5 people....
