I will go with a Michael Jacobs answer: it all depends.  If the property is unique enough, it may bring a considerable amount of other business.  Or, it could be a big waste of time.

Home is where the hearth is.

Well, there are LOTS of benefits to the seller of an "overpriced" listing.

(please note that technically, since you called them a "seller".. .that means it SOLD, and therefore they got a really good... somewhat overpriced, price!... so lots of benefits, most of them cash.   Good benefits for the listing agent of that SOLD property, too!).

Of course far fewer benefits for the owner/listing agent of that unsold overpriced listing.

Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers - it gives ample of time for sellers to move out.

They also need not worry to keep home ready for showing more often. However, getting ready for listing may help them de-clutter the home - and kids may keep their room clean, too.

Once the home is on market, they may stop receiving the marketing flyers, letters from other agents (though some still send with a disclosure...)

None. In fact it could get them an even lower price the longer it stays on the market.

They may believe it will sell and I have seen it happen more than once. And often, they may believe that it benefits their ego.

They are likely playing a game.  Having it on the market to show someone they're trying to sell it or putting it on at a "If I get this I'll move price."

Peace of mind that they won't be moving soon! Then again, if it is not on the market they get the same benefit without the headaches!

They get to stay in their house longer than they'd ever imagined and they get to hold out for a lower price than what they could have gotten had they priced it properly in the first place.

It means they get to have lots of conversations with their agent to find out why their home isn't selling. And they don't have to keep their home in showing condition since no one will be coming by anyway

My first thought of a Benefit to a Seller, is a 'true reality check' when they are seeing and faced with no Showings and no Offers.  Might be overpriced?  They are forced to see that no one is receptive to their home at it's current price even when it is in good shape and clean.  If they are motivated and have a timeline for selling/moving, they will not be willing to wait for 'the right person at the right time' to select their house Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers, so their perception will become their reality.

No benefit to the seller other than they feel good about their price, their magic pie in the sky number.

Sellers are afraid to price below the market getting the ingridents for over bidding. In PA I have seen low priced listing start with 500M higher on 1st offer but those over 3M will have some time to go through the price reduction to get a buyer.

There are two homes that have been on the market two years now. What goes through the sellers head is beyond me. Both will sell in 1 week if priced correctly.
