I am sure the criticism would have been louder and more justified if the boy had died from a lack of action.

Pat, That's right here in our turf. Was just down at the zoo about a week ago. Their on scene assessment was tranquilizers would take too long to work to guarantee the child's safety. If they could have saved both, they would have. It's a catch-22 for the zoo. If they didn't do all they could to protect the kid, they'd be facing the other side of the coin and everyone screaming for heads to roll for letting a child die. Bill

The mother is unfit.
The head of that Zoo should be fired.
Bring criminal charges against the shooter/sniper that murdered that magnificent animal.
PETA needs to shut up; they are taking advantage of this to advance their agenda.
Take that stupid kid to Tanzania, leave him to be raised with a group of chimpanzees or gorillas.

Um, why isn't the mother being held responsible to a higher degree? I feel for that Gorilla but it wasn't it's fault - and why weren't precautions taken so this NEVER happened

I hope the zoo sends the bill for the gorilla to the person in charge of the child. The responsibility for the incident lies with whoever was not watching the 4 year old

I think it was a scary situation and the staff had to make a decision of which life to save. They choose the staff the choose to save the child.

It's always easier to criticize when you don't have all the facts. Who loves animals more than someone working in a Zoo? From all I've heard, they had to make a decision fast or the boy could die. I'm sure it pained them more than the noisy activists.

Can you imagine what it would have been if the little boy was killed? There should be some criticism of parents, however, who are not monitoring their small children closely in this type of venue.

Mother needs to be held responsible who is hiding out now saying she's a great mother to a total of 3.
I read this morning & had to agree when seeing the video if people would have just stopped screaming, maybe the gorilla wouldn't have gotten so upset. The kids mother saying 'Mommy loves you in the video' is just so stupid.
Also last week the nutjob who undressed & then went into a lions cage where they killed him, then they killed the lions. He committed suicide & the lions had to pay.

I am happy I was not the one in charge of that situation because it was a no-win scenario. The people who made the decision did what they thought was necessary so I wouldn't second guess their decision. I really haven't heard yet how that child was able to get in there; that's what I'm most curious about.

I suspect the zoo did what they thought was right and what they thought would prevent the inevitable lawsuit had the child been harmed because YOU KNOW that would have been next.
However, with that said, ARE PARENTS EVER GOING TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING CARE OF THEIR OWN KIDS? Really, I am absolutely outraged it happened at all - the zoo is NOT your $#%^ babysitter, people. Put down your phones and pay attention to your children.

I am a firm believer in all Animals; including us deserve to live.
As the Human Life is at the top of the scale it was deemed necessary to take the Gorilla's life.
Just lie other scenario's in our everyday lives someone had to make a decision to take a life and now the other 99% have to have their two cents worth.

My daughter just told me the story. Sounds wild....I've been zillions of times in different Zoos with my kids, i'm not sure how that kid could get in, all areas are usually designed quite safe since no one wants to be liable, you have to make a lot of affords to get over those fences.....I'm sure, that zoo staff would do anything to save that 400 pound silver-back Harambe...but it was not an option.....very sadly. Well, the kid is ok. And as I just read on Twitter, one of the biggest motivation for zoo staff to kill was a possible lawsuit from the parents.....again......hard to tell......but i hope, those parents know that would they just jeopardize the life of their own small kid and made this murder happen.....Just sad...

This story makes me sick! I agree with Fred Griffin.. I would have liked to heard they both lived. I get so aggravited that the Mother and others actually let that kid get that far. What was MOM doing? Someone saw this as it happened..My kid or not I would have tried to stop the boy. Parents nowadays :-( ??

It was a tragic accident with the best possible outcome after it began. The child was clearly in danger and they zoo officials made the only decision they could make. I believe under the circustances it was the right one. However it's a shame that it could happen.

Seems extreme and rash, but it was to save the little boy's life. The gorilla was dragging him around and his head was banging on the concrete. The zoo officials claim that the professionals throughout the world support their decision, including such experts as Jane Goodall.

It is my understanding that the tranquilizers would have taken too long. Was the mother at fault for not keeping a better eye on her son? Was the zoo at fault for not having better safeguards? Trust me, the attorneys are all over this. Had they not shot the gorilla, I can only imagine what we would all be saying.

I agree with Bob Crane the criticism would have been much greater had they not taken action. A very tough situation. But, why did this happen in the first place. Security measures must be evaluated at the zoo to prevent this from ever happening again.

It's so unfortunate, but they were damned if they do and damned if they don't. It's easy to sympathize with the gorilla because the "what if" scenario never played out. I wish the gorilla hadn't had to die, but I put higher value on the life of a human being over an animal. My bigger question is, why is it so easy for a small child to physically get into an exhibit? This has happened many times before.
-
Patricia Kennedy

They are the professionals, if the tranquilizer took 10 minutes, the little boy could have been easily killed by then. They did what they needed to do. I would like to see the film of the boy getting in there to see who was negligent, the parent or the zoo? on the protesters, people will protest anything these days.

WHERE WAS HIS MOTHER? or Father, guardian, whatever! Someone should have been watching this poor child. The zoo did the only thing they could in my opinion.
3,986,529
They could not take the chance, but how in the world did the kid fall in there and who put him in a position to fall.
Maybe the parents should be chared?!
399,937
I was sad to hear of the incident. I don't really have all of the facts and am not exactly sure how it all unfolded. I understand that the staff did what they thought best and am so glad that I didn't have to be the one making that decision.
1,545,944
I'll "Monday morning quarterback" this one!
A tranq would have been a better choice than a bullet. The "he was trying to save the kid" is in hindsight watching the video while having no stress of needing to make a decision and act. Same bullshit that cops get when someone pulls a toy gun on them or a phone in the manner of a pistol.
The people that really need to shut the heck up about this, are the black lives matter people. Yes, they are already spouting that the black gorilla was killed for "white privilege."
I'm glad the parents are being charged.
2,871,041
Tough decision and someone had to make it. They actually had trained personnel trained & ready for this. I wondered how someone could fall into the Gorilla pit to begin with? Zoos? I bet living in a "pit" is the pits too.
1,112,058
This is a tragic and awful situation. I am so saddened that the animal had to be killed and wonder why they don't have tranq guns for stuff like this. I also can't wrap my mind around a parent whose inattentiveness could have brought about this chain of events. And then again, kids are very very ingenious when it comes to escaping and getting into where they don't belong. I expect the family to sue the zoo for unsafe conditions. You watch.
<----- did not have kids, stuff like this is why.
1,395,083
824,029
I was initially against what happened and really angry with the parents for being negligent. Once I saw the full video, I felt the zoo officials had no choice due to the uncertain outcome and all the people screaming and scaring the primate. With regard to the parents, I am not so understanding. How could the child have gotten so far without someone grabbing him, how could she sound so calm in talking to him when the gorilla had him, and why didn't she jump into the enclosure to save him... I would have.
225,576
It was a bad situation for all. I love all animals, so this was hard to take. But it teaches us many things. Parents need to parent. Watch your kids at all times and be responsible. The kids said that he wanted to be with the gorilla to the mom, so that should have been a sign for her. Teach you children that when you say NO, it means NO. The zoo should have made the areas after so that this could not happen in the first place. We live in a world of being reactive, not proactive. Let's make sure this never happens again
1,153,799
I don't think anything of it Patricia. If you weren't there as this tragedy unfolded you have no say in the matter and I have no reason to listen.
