The reality is EVERYONE uses VOIP, regardless of the carrier.
Yes, that means your AT&T landline uses VOIP at some stage in the communications.
The only decision the consumer has is how much money are the willing to save before it starts costing them money. Some VOIP provides is too much like the old 'uni-directional' communictions punctuated with "Over." And even then you did not get the echo chamber, multiplexed slicing and the equivilent of 'voice pixelization."

Yes, I use MagicJack. $35/yr even has a mobile phone app. I've been very happy with it. Just can't call most conference call lines with it (because they charge the phone provider for the call), but they provide their own service for you to use.

My real estate number is a Skype number and I subscribe to their yearly service plan. That gives me the option to make calls via my smartphone's phone (for known contacts) or via Skype (for unknowns) using my smartphone's Skype app or from my computer. I also use Skype for all conference calls for the day-job but my smartphone is nearby as a backup if the Skype quality drops during the call.
I'd say about 90% of the time there are no issues. The other times I get reverb, echo, and/or cutting in/out. I would not recommend it for an only-phone set-up.

Nope just my iPhone. The few people I know who did use this method had a fair number of issues. Why bother?

Nothing I currently use - not even a landline - has good enough sound quality to make me happy, so to go to something that makes me sound like I'm 3 feet away, plugging my nose with a metal clothespin hooked up to a battery isn't an option. I can't wait till it is.

I've been using Vonage for years. My little box and my office phone come with me when I travel (a small Polycom phone). It works fantastically in hotel rooms. You never have to worry about cell service when your in unknown territory...

I am shocked that there was only one comment about Google's service. I have used Google Hangouts / Google Voice. It is free and amazing. My office is in my basement, so cell phone service doesn't work well so I use Google Voice on my PC and use it's audio system instead of my cell phone stuck to my head all day. You can also set up the number to ring any or all your other phones and within certain hours. It also converts your calls to text. I could go on and on. Love it.
