I have volunteered at least 10 hours a month, and usually 40 or more, every year since I was 10 years old. Volunteer work is part of the fabric of life for me.

Our family is SUPER involved in Boy Scouts. I also make time once or twice a month to take our kids to the food bank to volunteer since we all really enjoy helping. There are so many great organizations and so little time. I have noticed that, while I still consistantly volunteer, where I volunteer has changed as my children get older.

Second Food Harvest

People can find time if they just schedule it. I volonteered with Virginia Defense Force.  I have two 2+ mile stretches of road that I pick up trash twice a year with Adopt-a- Highway. I do cemetery workshops once or twice a year where we clean, reset, repair gravestones that need work.

My big one is the Carmel Art Festival each May in Carmel-by-the-Sea. In fact, I just wrote a blog here about it. Click here to see what some of that entails.

currently only through my church, but in the past I've served on non profit boards and service organizations.  But between running a brokerage, being president of my local MLS and my church I've cut other things back this past year.

I spend about 20 hours each week working with the church.

I did ten years of it steady and then broadened it to random acts of kindness

I spent a lot more time volunteering when the kids were younger and just a year ago took a step back.  Now I spend my time supporting the efforts of groups that they're involved in.  The intention is to volunteer more consistently with an organization that I can truly "get behind" when I allow life to include that activity again.

At my local no-kill pet shelter... and will be there on Saturday (maybe a bit early).

I volunteer and hope to transition from work to more community involvment. I volunteer on Catchafire , Kiva , and am now supporting local business in a pay forward campaign . Meeting today with someone in the not for profit sector to discuss a business model to help hardest hit neighborhoods and help create jobs and affordable housing. Kind of my recent obsession

Sharon you have to make time it is simple as that, you schedule it it is a choice, just like reading books you have to schedule it like an appointment...if you do vigorous time blocking it will become second nature, Endre

I do not volunteer as much as I used to.  I am an animal lover and advocate so most of my volunteer time goes to the animals.

One Sunday a month I cook at th.e local homeless shelter

I used to volunteer when we lived in CA at two different places (Police Dept in Truancy and the local Food Bank), and volunteered for 3 years here at one place (local hospital in OP Surgery).  I do love volunteering, though left it when I went into real estate.  I really want to go back, though would love to work with animals.  Unfortunately, those locations are all the way across town, and don't want to drive 45 minutes one-way, so I am currently rethinking that option Sharon Kowitz.  If I was not part of a 'Team' I don't think I could go back to volunteering being a newbie . . .  sounds like you worked some excellent projects yourself!!

Thanks for letting us know, but I would feel very wrong about volunteering only for  that one week. It is always a right time to give back to your community in any way. 

We have an outreach in our association where I volunteer a full Saturday in the summer, sit on a few committees, and deliver goodies at Christmas time.
