I am surprised any state allows and unlicensed professional in such an important aspect of home selling. Mark

What Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint said. At least then the "bad apples" have a license to lose...

Jeff, it's not a bad idea, but I don't think that license requirements necessarily result in competence.

Co went through this, but it hasn't passed into law yet. It failed the last time around. I think all home inspectors should be licensed.

It is crazy that anyone can pass themselves off as a professional.

Good morning Jeff. Absolutely, as some of the reports I have read, the home inspector did an average or below job on the report.

Wow that's kind of incredible (read as incredibly stupid) to not require this.

Jeff Pearl A home inspection is an important aspect of our industry. Home inspectors should probably be licensed.

Jeff - I would have to agree with Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint. I would say that all Home Inspectors should at least be "required" to get certified or licensed. It should never be voluntary.
I think licensing is a good thing.

I don't think the unlicensed ones do much business, so don't really see it as a big change.
I can't believe anything is making it though the VA legislature! There's probably some add-on to the bill that will kill it.

UPDATE: Senate Bill 453 (Sen. Bill Stanley), which creates a licensure system for home inspectors, passed overwhelmingly out of the Senate General Laws and Technology Committee with 10 votes in favor, zero opposed and two abstentions. The full Senate will consider the legislation later this week.

No, there is already too much government control in our country, let the market weed out the poor quality and reward the good ones.

Jeff,
I am licensed in Texas where inspectors must be licensed and in Colorado where they aren’t. I am STRONGLY in favor of licensing if for no other reason than a common standard that inspectors use. In Colorado, with no standards, inspectors write up stuff all over the map.

Jeff... inspectors in NC and SC must be licensed and insured. I just still can't believe how many states do not require this.

There is currently no licensing requirement in Ontario.
Whether Virginia should require home inspectors to be licensed is a matter for the Virginia state legislature to determine based on whatever criteria they deem important.
